The Grants Accountant III, under the Director of Finance, manages a team of grant accountants and oversees the collection, reporting, and monitoring of government and foundation grants. This role ensures compliance with grant contracts, laws, and nonprofit accounting principles, particularly restricted funds accounting. The position requires proficiency in grant billing, budget preparation, and financial reporting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee the accounting system and general ledger coding.
- Review assigned contracts, focusing on financial sections.
- Manage grant portfolios, ensuring updates in the accounting system.
- Prepare monthly grant budget reports, monitor variances, and support program staff with solutions.
- Oversee timely grant billings and ensure staff training on accurate billing.
- Manage staff allocations in collaboration with finance and program teams.
- Assist in grant receivable collections to minimize outstanding balances.
- Serve as the primary liaison to grantors for assigned grants.
- Prepare periodic financial analysis reports.
- Manage budget modifications and new grant preparation.
- Support audit processes as needed.
- Stay updated on laws and regulations affecting grant management.
- Adhere to departmental standards, policies, and procedures.
- Support cross-functional teams as needed and provide backup in emergencies.
- Uphold organizational mission and strategic goals.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, business, or related field, or substantial applicable experience.
- 3-5 years of experience in accounting or related field.
- 2-3 years of experience managing and supervising finance staff.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in accounting software, spreadsheets, and word processing.
- Strong understanding of accounting processes, procedures, and internal controls.
- Excellent research and analytical skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Advanced coursework in accounting or related fields.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
- 3-5 years of experience in the nonprofit sector.
