About the Job
This position accurately applies ionizing radiation for radiologic diagnosis, including skills required in performing a variety of technical procedures, resulting in the highest quality diagnostic radiograph, with the least amount of radiation exposure to the patient. Extern will be under supervision of a registered technologist at all times and should not be placed in complex clinical circumstances as in going to the operating room or as the sole person in the department.
Responsibilities:(25%)* Performs radiographic and fluoroscopic procedures utilizing accurate application of ionizing radiation for radiologic diagnosis.
(25%)* Positions patient and equipment appropriately to accurately demonstrate the area being examined, requiring extensive anatomic positioning skills.
(25%)* Provides appropriate radiation protection for patient and staff during radiation exposures according to prescribed safety standards.
(25%)* Adjusts technical factors to provide appropriate exposure by use of independent judgment, knowledge of human anatomy, effect of disease on the radiograph and the principles of radiation as well as the specific operation of all radiologic equipment within the department.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Hours worked within this position are not eligible to be used as clinical hours within the Radiography Training Program.
Under supervision of a registered technologist performs radiographic and fluoroscopic procedures utilizing accurate application of ionizing radiation for radiological diagnosis.
Adjusts technical factors to provide appropriate exposure by use of independent judgment, knowledge of human anatomy as well as the specific operation of all radiological equipment within the department.
Positions patient and equipment appropriately to accurately demonstrate the area being examined, requiring extensive anatomic positioning skills.
Provides appropriate radiation protection for patient and staff during radiation exposures according to safety standards.
Assists radiologist as needed in performance of sterile procedures, i.e., Myelograms, Arthrograms etc.
Understanding of the preparation and administration of various forms of radiologic contrast media and medications. Has knowledge to readily identify and treat allergic reactions to contrast media. Practices sterile technique.
Attends in-service educational programs and departmental meetings.
Initiates requisitions, adds or modifies charges, acknowledges exams, requiring the use of the computer.
Ability to recognize and report malfunction of radiographic equipment appropriately.
All other duties as assigned.
Certifications and Licensures:
ARRT - Reg Radiologic Technologist Required Equivalent Experience - Will be ARRT eligible within the next 6 months.
BLS - Basic Life Support Required Equivalent Experience - Within 1 month of hire or transfer

Comments: Currently attending a formal College based program that is a JRC approved Radiography Training Program, a student in good standing and in the last semester of the program. Able to show documentation of completion or compliance with clinical hour requirements within the Radiography Training Program. Able to show documentation of satisfactory passing all radiology competencies

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:
Currently attending a formal College based program that is a JRC approved Radiography Training Program, a student in good standing and in the last semester of the program.
Able to show documentation of completion or compliance with clinical hour requirements within the Radiography Training Program.
Able to show documentation of satisfactory passing all radiology competencies.
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
Provides for the age specific needs of the population served according to department standards and policies/procedures as evidenced by observation, documentation and peer feedback for the following: Neonate/Infant, Toddler, Child, Adolescent, Adult and Later Adult.

At least nine (9) months of clinical experience through a Radiography Training Program.
Knowledge of Radiology Information System (RIS) and HIS preferred.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level: Medium. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% or the workday) 10 lbs.
