SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an experienced GIS Regional Team Lead (HR title = Geospatial Sciences Team Lead) for our Rocky Mountain-Plains (RMP) offices (Denver, Fort Collins, Sheridan, and Bismarck). The position will provide dynamic technical and organizational leadership for our Geospatial Technologies program as well as have a role in mentoring hardworking and talented GIS staff and working with office leaders to find opportunities to expand GIS services within the RMP region.
This position will primarily be in support of our natural, cultural, water and NEPA resources programs in the RMP. It will also require collaboration with, and support for, other SWCA GIS groups at the direction of the Principal Geospatial Sciences Program Lead and Director of Practice Technologies.
The Geospatial Team Lead position will be a core member of SWCA’s Geospatial Technologies program and will be responsible for the oversight and management of all aspects of GIS and geospatial technologies in the RMP including GIS project management, GIS technology integration, mentoring and managing staff, coordinating with other GIS Team leads across the company, leading business development efforts, and upholding our company’s standards of excellence and core values. To succeed in this role, the candidate must have the ability and willingness to work in faced-paced, busy, occasionally unpredictable consulting environment. The ideal candidate will also stay cool and organized under pressure, prioritize resources to complete projects under tight deadlines, and communicate effectively with GIS staff and project managers.
The position is a full-time, salaried position with full SWCA benefits. It is highly preferred that the candidate be located near our Broomfield, CO office.

What you will accomplish:
- Provide leadership and supervision for GIS group staff including staffing, professional growth mentorship, technical skills development, goals/objectives guidance, performance reviews, and issue resolution.
- Act as an ambassador and bridge builder between the GIS program and various resource program leads within the RMP and across the company
- Manage the workload and priorities of the GIS team to ensure that productivity goals are met and that projects are delivered on time and within budget across all offices within the RMP.
- Ensure timely status updates and technical details are communicated to project teams and project managers.
- Engage regularly with and maintain a collaborative partnership between office directors, project managers, resource leads and GIS staff to provide responsive support for our project, field, and marketing efforts.
- Interface with new and existing clients to develop GIS services and grow business to support and prime contract roles on various projects and initiatives.
- Lead regular GIS group meetings to communicate and discuss corporate messages, GIS program information, project updates, and upcoming work with team members.
- Responsible for QA/QC within the GIS group. Verify methods and outputs created by GIS group members. Maintain accurate documentation.
- Provide forward-thinking guidance and direction for the development and implementation of new GIS technologies, software, and innovative methods. Work with resource specialists, project managers, and GIS staff to identify opportunities for advancement on current and future projects and processes.
- Work with Program Lead and other GIS leads to document standard GIS protocols and procedures governing GIS data development, analysis, mapping, reporting, and QA/QC.
- Support internal and external marketing efforts by developing technical scopes of work, cost estimates, and schedules.
- Participate in presentations, client interviews, and other business development activities.
- Use the Esri ArcGIS platform and applications for developing and managing GIS data, geoprocessing, analysis, cartographic design, and map production.
- Adhere to a clean, organized, and well-designed file structure for both spatial and non-spatial data.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Geography, Cartography, Archaeology, Anthropology, Biology, Environmental Science, or related field with an emphasis in GIS (or GIS certificate). Equivalent experience and coursework are also acceptable.
- A minimum of eight (8) years of relevant industry experience.
- A minimum of five (5) years of professional GIS work beyond university attendance.
- Experience supervising, mentoring, or providing leadership for other GIS professionals.
- Proficient knowledge and ability to utilize Esri ArcGIS 10.x and ArcGIS Pro 2.x or higher.
- Demonstrated knowledge of cartography and computer mapping including design principles and understanding map and mapping automation procedures in ArcGIS.
- Demonstrated ability to perform spatial analyses within ArcGIS while maintaining data integrity.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a related field, such as Environmental Science, Biology, or Anthropology.
- Prior work experience in the environmental consulting industry or a background in natural or cultural resources management, and/or water resources, is strongly preferred.
- Experience marketing GIS services to internal and external clients.
- Experience working on multiple complex projects with multiple stakeholders on short timelines.
- Prior knowledge and experience with ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online web and mobile, Python, database management, and other GIS platforms.
- Prior experience working with federal land agencies such as the USFS, NPS, BLM, BOR, USGS, or other.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and communicate effectively with company leaders, project managers, and other non-GIS professionals.
- Ability to prioritize GIS staff and technical resources to meet numerous and competing project and proposal deadlines.
- Ability to produce presentations, and/or written protocol of methods for reports or within metadata to replicate GIS-related analyses or modeling techniques applied on projects.

- Ability to travel to RMP office locations on a quarterly basis.

An employee in this Denver, CO -based position can expect a salary of $80,808/year - $102,648/year. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
