Overview
The GIS Hydrography Analyst is part of NV5’s Elevation Derived Hydrography program, a leader in nationwide surface water modeling. This position supports Technical Leads in the production, quality control, and technical troubleshooting of large-scale geospatial projects for water resource mapping. By contributing to our mission of effective natural resource management through advanced geospatial analysis, you will play a key role in our team by performing tasks with limited oversight – an ideal opportunity for detail-oriented individuals with an ability to identify improvements towards processing efficiency and data integrity.
This position is responsible for quality assurance, data management, and producing project deliverables in a consistent and timely manner. Analysts are primarily expected to perform technical assignments independently but will also coordinate with production teams to provide feedback and ensure standard operating procedures are adapted based on project requirements. Proficiency in Lidar, IfSAR, and imagery interpretation for the purpose of hydrologic modeling are required for this role, as well as experience with GIS software including ArcGIS Pro and/or QGIS.

Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
- Production Oversight: Supports project-level data production by establishing best practices for surface hydrography feature extraction, identifying & communicating data quality concerns, and performing complex raster & vector processing workflows to produce deliverable products in compliance with the US Geological Survey (USGS) 3D Hydrography Program (3DHP) specifications
- Data Management: Organizes, manipulates, and distributes spatial data to ensure consistent throughput of production tasks
- Quality Control: Performs thorough quality assurance on interim and final products using custom python geoprocessing tools, and providing feedback to production editing team members to coordinate production based on project specifications
- Collaboration: Works closely with project managers, team leads, and developers to continually improve standard operating and training procedures in alignment with the program’s goals
- Process Improvement: Helps develop and maintain workflows for processing, visualization, and analysis of geospatial data via automations and workflow development
- Communication: Provides consistent and thorough progress updates for individual tasks and high-level project development

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience with hydrographic datasets, including but not limited to hydrologic flowline networks and digital elevation models
- Bachelor's degree in Geography, Geospatial Science, Environmental Science, or equivalent/related experience
- 2+ years of GIS Technician or equivalent experience
- 2+ years of spatial analysis experience working with ArcGIS Pro or similar GIS software
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with U.S Geological Survey National Hydrography Dataset (NHD), Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD), and/or 3D Hydrography Program (3DHP) specifications
- Understanding of geospatial data management packages, including but not limited to GDAL, ArcPy, Shapely, and GeoPandas
- Python, C++, and/or R programming
- Experience with database design and/or working in a distributed database environment
- 1+ years of code development, collaboration, and versioning using GitHub
