Title: Sports Coach
Division: Middle School, Upper School or School-wide
Location: Making Waves Academy Richmond
Reports to: Athletic Director
Status: Seasonal
Hourly: A stipend is offered at an hourly rate of $17.20 depending on experience
Position Summary
The role of the Sports Coach at Making Waves Academy is responsible for developing a program of inclusion and education that works to advance the students’ athletic skill set, as well as the students’ character and the team culture so that all players on a team feel a part of the team and enjoy their experience on the team. Developing a competitive nature is part of this skill set, but not the sole focus.
Primary Responsibilities
Team Activities
- Practices: Attend, plan, organize and carry out practices including communicating times and expectations with parents and players and Athletic Director.
- Games: Attend and coach at games, setting an example for the players and fans as to proper game decorum and attitude to players, coaches, officials, game personnel and fans.
Team Logistics
- Equipment: Distribute and collect player uniforms. Return all balls, nets, cones, etc. used during the season to Athletic Director.
- Transportation: Work together with Athletic Director and Parent Rep. to coordinate transportation requirements.
- Game Scheduling: Work together with the Athletic Director and league to create the league schedule and non-league games, balancing both the student’s and school schedule.
Team Culture
- Work to create a positive experience for all players and coaches involved in the sport emphasizing skill development and player growth as a person, as well as an athlete.
- Support the players to understand how the skills (athletic, moral, character, etc.) will help them in their future lives.
- Demonstrate the fundamental skills of the game to the players, and be an active participant during practice (up and about encouraging and teaching the students).
Supervision
- Be present on the bus on game days to ensure appropriate behavior of the players.
- Guarantee that at least one coach remains after games and practice until all players have left.
- Partner with the on-campus Athletic Trainer to help with player injuries and prevention.
Additional Responsibilities and Expectations
Mission Alignment
- Demonstrate knowledge of, and support, Making Waves Academy’s mission, core values, standards, competencies, and code of conduct outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Develop a Team Mission Statement as well as a Coaches’ Transformational Purpose statement. These two statements should drive the program/team and shape all the activities associated with the team and all the player’s development as athletes and as people.
- Support the other program’s in the Athletic Department (teams) both in and out of season since we share athletes and space on campus.
Other
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Work Environment
This seasonal position operates in various areas, including but not limited to the use of sports fields, gyms, both on-campus and off-campus as applicable.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this seasonal job, the employee may be required to walk, climb, bend, or stand for long time periods.
Travel
Some travel required for events, such as workshops or conferences. This includes driving an authorized school van to practice and/or games.
Qualifications
Experience
- Past experience coaching a Club or School level team highly preferred
- Experience playing particular sport at a Club, school and/or College level
- Experience coaching students
- Familiarity with Restorative Justice Framework and Philosophy
- Understanding of California Education Code as it relates to student behavior and conduct and a Coaches responsibility to be a mandate reporter

- Ability to effectively communicate with students, players, families, and athletic department via email in a timely manner
- Highly effective and professional communication skills with staff, students and families
- Ability to adapt and align on school-related initiatives
- Highly organized, goal-oriented, and focused on outcomes
- Ability to communicate with and build relationships with students and their families in the culturally and linguistically diverse MWA community
- Ability to uphold and reinforce school policies and procedures when addressing students and families (particularly with our school academic and discipline expectations)
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently
- Ability to work effectively in fast-paced environments with limited supervision
- Professional orientation – appearance, communication, organization, and attitude
Education
- Knowledge of the Sport and the ability to teach it to your players through one’s participation in the sport at a variety of levels of play in one’s past (youth, school, college, etc.)
- College education is preferred to exemplify to our students their educational opportunities
- Valid CPR and First Aid certification
- CTC Fingerprint/Certificate of Clearance (COC) required.
