General Transit Bus Garage Mechanic
THIS JOB OPENING IS BEING USED TO FILL CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANT POSITIONS IN THIS CLASSIFICATION AT VARIOUS SHIFTS, LOCATIONS AND ASSIGNED DAYS OFF.
ORDER OF PREFERENCE: The selection for Maintenance and Construction is made on the basis of fitness and ability with preference given to: Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (L689), Authority-Wide and external candidates, respectively.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Twelve (12) months after an employee achieves a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), he/she shall advance to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed the required written and practical test(s), acquired the applicable certifications and has met the other requirements.
Satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this position, if required. The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of this position either with or without reasonable accommodations.
Mission Essential Designation:
In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority s Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.
SUMMARY
The General Transit Bus Garage Mechanic performs skilled vehicle maintenance that includes troubleshooting, disassembly, repair, assembly and/or installation of automotive/diesel engines, transmissions, large and small electric/pneumatic/hydraulic components, chassis and vehicle body repairs for bus and automotive fleet, in the operation maintenance and repair of Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) s vehicles and equipment.
Job Levels : At each successive grade level of this job (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description
AA Lead Level: In addition to independently performing the most complex aspects of the duties and essential functions described, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring work responsibilities of a group or team are properly completed in a timely manner.

- High School Diploma or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED)

- Level D
- Two (2) years as a Garage Mechanic, or related experience
- The following vocational/technical training can be substituted for two (2) years of full-time work experience at ALL levels:
- three (3) years high school mechanical training
- two (2) years tech school mechanical training; OR,
- two (2) years college mechanical training
- The following vocational/technical training can be substituted for two (2) years of full-time work experience at ALL levels:
- Two (2) years as a Garage Mechanic, or related experience
- Level C
- Three (3) years as a Garage Mechanic, or related experience
- Level B
- Four (4) years as a Garage Mechanic, or related experience
- Level A
- Five (5) years as a Garage Mechanic, or related experience
- Level AA
- Six (6) years as a Garage Mechanic, or related experience
- Technical Certification/Licenses in Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Military Occupational Specialty code ( MOSC) for Military experience in related field
- Satisfactorily pass all required ASE and WMATA certification tests following new hire training
- Valid Class B Commercial Drivers (CDL) or CDL Learner s Permit from jurisdiction of residence is required prior to appointment with proper endorsements (for Level D new hires only)
- No more than 4 points and 1 moving violation in the past 24 months
- Valid Class A Commercial Drivers (CDL) from jurisdiction of residence is required within 90 calendar days of promotion/appointment with Passenger bus, Air Brake, and tow truck operations endorsement (All Levels).
- Intra State Commercial Driver s License with Passenger, Air Brake and tow truck operations endorsements is accepted with a provisional appointment valid until the age of 21
- Level D
- Any of the following:
- One (1) current ASE certification in one field (Transit Bus, Automotive, Medium/Heavy Truck or School Bus)
- Military Occupational Skills Course (MOSC) certifications in a related field
- Associate s degree in Automotive Technology
- Automotive Manufacturer-specific certifications
- Two (2) years of vocational training in transit bus, automotive, medium/heavy truck or school bus maintenance from an accredited school recognized by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC)
- Level C
- One (1) current ASE certification in one field (Transit Bus, Automotive, Medium/Heavy Truck or School Bus)
- Level B
- Two (2) current ASE certification in one field (Transit Bus, Automotive, Medium/Heavy Truck or School Bus)
- Level A
- Four (4) current ASE certification in one field (Transit Bus, Automotive, Medium/Heavy Truck or School Bus)
- Level AA
- Current ASE certifications of H2, H3, H4, H5, and H6
- Level AAL
- Current ASE certifications of H2, H3, H4, H5, and H6
- N/A

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs, in compliance with established procedures and maintenance standards, basic to more complexed maintenance work on WMATA vehicles, to ensure safety and reliability of parts and equipment.
- Utilizes established procedures for operation, installation, maintenance and repair of WMATA s vehicles and equipment
- Performs major repairs on all designated component parts of vehicles and analyzes and corrects those components having special or new problems, to appropriately maintain a safe operation and maintenance of WMATA vehicles and related components.
- Performs major engine work by conducting technical diagnostics, to ensure continuity of operations and reliability of parts and equipment.
- Performs all task conformance with safety and maintenance practices and procedures, to comply with safety regulations and conduct all activities in a safe, efficient manner.
- Uses various types of test equipment and related specialized tools associated with job assignment, in accordance with applicable codes and principle standards. Completes required documentation and reports by using the proper forms and tags
- Responds to and assists in emergencies such as securing or safeguarding WMATA vehicles and equipment, fire/life/safety and snow emergencies, to promote the Authority s transit-supporting goals and to provide high-quality customer service.
- Performs tasks which may include heavy physical labor. Works various hours, locations, and days as required.
