General Manager

Job Summary: The General Manager will oversee plant supply, production, and customer service operations. This role involves developing and implementing strategies to meet manufacturing goals, align plant operations with overall business objectives, and manage financial planning for both short and long-term objectives. This includes managing the annual operating plan, capital and operating costs, and personnel utilization to sustain manufacturing efforts.
Essential Job Functions:
- Directs and ensures compliance with EH&S programs and systems.
- Drives growth by managing internal processes (quoting, prototypes, product launch, and lead-time expectations) in collaboration with the commercial team, ensuring full responsiveness to customer needs.
- Effectively plans, directs, and coordinates production, quality control, and maintenance to meet customer commitments.
- Utilizes ERP and corporate financial systems to report performance and financial data.
- Assists with establishing operating budgets across plant operations.
- Monitors and controls direct and indirect costs within the expense and capital budgets to meet annual and strategic plans.
- Oversees production activities, ensuring material flow to support monthly production plans.
- Plans and controls production capacity and resources to support product sales.
- Identifies and applies necessary labor efforts to meet the production schedule.
- Optimizes inventory and capacity (capital & labor) against service commitments.
- Establishes and tracks quality and cost improvement programs.
- Participates in quality programs across departments and the organization.
- Researches, plans, and controls cost reductions on existing products, focusing on continuous improvement.
- Manages Kaizen and other process improvement initiatives.
- Develops an internal network with other company operations for best practice sharing and capital footprint optimization.
- Establishes, implements, and revises policies and procedures for manufacturing operations.
- Reports on site-specific activities and performance metrics.
- Provides updates and status reports as requested by management and customers.
- Maintains a communication process within the facility to ensure employee engagement and alignment with business goals.
- Manages processes to address and diffuse employee issues, maintaining positive relations.
- Coordinates with shared services (HR, Accounting, IT, etc.)
- Proactively manages positive relations with unionized workforce and Business Representatives.
Skills and Abilities:
- Proven leadership experience in plant operations, including production planning, quality control, cost reduction, supply chain methods, and manufacturing engineering.
- Experience with Lean manufacturing techniques and their application to business needs.
- Capability to meet key metrics including EH&S objectives, on-time delivery, quality, cost management, and inventory management.
- Strong computer skills (MS Office) and experience with ERP systems.
- Ability to lead, plan, and manage a diverse manufacturing business.
- Ability to make and execute sound business decisions with minimal direction and work effectively in a matrix environment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
- Experience managing a union environment.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of seven to ten years of manufacturing and operations experience in a plant management role.
