WRITTEN AND SPOKEN FLUENCY IN SPANISH REQUIRED
An established contemporary art gallery in Chelsea with an international roster of artists seeks a Spanish speaking Gallery Assistant. The ideal candidate will have a knowledge of contemporary art and experience in a supportive role at a gallery, museum or comparable arts organization. Strong organizational and verbal communication skills are essential. The Gallery Assistant will be precise, self-motivated, attentive to detail, efficient and have a demonstrated ability to prioritize among competing tasks.This position will be responsible for such things as gallery maintenance, visitor reception, support for the Vice President, database maintenance, as well as administrative and sales support.A bachelor’s degree, as well as a background in art history, visual arts or a similar field are preferred.
Responsibilities include (but not limited to):
Gallery maintenance and daily supervision
- Opening and closing the gallery daily
- Manage incoming mail and prepare outgoing shipments
- Ensure general tidiness of communal spaces and maintain supplies
- General logistical support (printing, filing, etc.)
Visitor reception
- Manage gallery phone calls
- Welcome visitors
- Create, disseminate, and post exhibition checklists and press releases
- Assist sales team with client visits
- Act as support for gallery events; work with Director to plan opening events
- Alert sales staff to key visitors
Support for the Vice President
- Assist in scheduling appointments
- Assist in travel planning for the VP
- Work with VP on research and special requests
Database maintenance
- Update and maintain gallery contact records
- Update and maintain artist CVs
Administrative and sales support
- Oversee gallery’s book inventory
- Create sales PDFs and Private Views for exhibitions, art fairs, and personalized offers
Requirements:
- Experience in a supporting role at a gallery, museum or comparable arts or entertainment organization
- Bachelor’s degree, a background in art history, visual arts or a similar field is preferred
- Full written and spoken fluency in Spanish and English required
- Familiarity with contemporary art
- Poised and friendly demeanor; comfort engaging with the public
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work closely and cooperatively with the gallery’s team
- Ability to meet deadlines and multitask in a fast-paced environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite required
