Freshens Fresh Food Kitchen is a fresh casual restaurant offering prepared-to-order food, fresh-blended smoothies, and rice and salad bowls, with a healthy and hearty “flavor first” menu. Located at the intersection of downtown Salem, VA, and the Roanoke College campus, Freshens serves both students and community members. The assistant manager is a working manager who supports the mission of Dining Services, serves in all necessary roles within the operation, and performs administrative and supervisory functions necessary for daily operations, while adhering to Freshens corporate standards. In the absence of the Freshens coordinator (manager), the assistant manager assumes lead supervisory responsibility. This individual must have a disposition for providing excellent customer service, ability to teach and train others with differing skill and knowledge, and set the team’s pace for delivering excellent hospitality experiences.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serves as a representative of Roanoke College- displaying courtesy, tact and respect in all interaction with our students, members of the RC community, and the public.
- Assists the staff in daily operations, helps with the ensuring consistent production of recipes, proper and handling of food and other inventory.
- Serve customers with enthusiasm in a positive and friendly manner
- Teach, train, and mentor staff, including benefitted, non-benefitted, and student staff.
- Process financial deposits, accurately handle payment transactions using a variety of tenders, including: Cash, Credit, student meal plans, etc..
- Perform opening or closing duties as scheduled to provide for on-time hours of operations.
- Develop strong knowledge of menu items and be able to provide customers with product details.
- Ensure compliance with national brand partnership standards.
- Support the operation of mobile ordering software and hardware (Transact Mobile).
- Ensure daily and weekly cleaning tasks are completed as required in the unit, seating areas and storage areas.
- Support operation’s inventory of menu items to assist in ordering products.
- Apply and enforce proper methods of safety and sanitation as instructed by the VDH and Dining.
- Ensure cleanliness and proper storage and maintenance of facilities, all equipment, dishware, and utensils, including performing manual and machine-aided cleaning.
- Participate in team meetings and provide clear communication to staff and to help fulfill Dining Services’ mission, vision, and practice our shared values
Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:
- Nights and weekend availability required.
- Ability to meticulously maintain a clean and safe food service environment
- Ability to problem solve and work in a fast-paced environment
- Must be organized and self-motivated
- Positive communication with guests and co-workers is essential
- Required to obtain ServSafe certification within 6 months of hire.
- 1+ years prior supervisory experience in hospitality and/or food service is required.
- Quick Service Restaurant experience preferred.
Serving as a representative of Roanoke College, Dining Services employees must display courtesy, tact and respect in all interactions with our students, members of the RC community, and with the general public. All positions require work every other weekend. Candidates must be willing to wear a uniform (provided) and non-slip safety shoes (shoe allowance provided). This is a 11 month, full time position.
