About the Opportunity:
The Forestry Technician/Youth Tree Team Senor Lead Hybrid position is a unique role that will at different times of the season help carry out the mission from both the Education and the Program division of the organization. This role will take on both jobs responsibilities starting within the Youth Tree Team then integrating to the Program side.
The Forestry Technician:
The Forestry Technician role is considered an entry-level position that conducts its work mainly in an outdoors setting. A Forestry Technician assists with all aspects of the maintenance of Atlanta’s public right-of-way, park trees, and greenspaces to sustain the health and vigor of Atlanta’s urban canopy. Technicians will work closely with Trees Atlanta program staff.
- Perform proper tree maintenance – watering, mulching, and pruning.
- Perform proper plant removal of target species, such as privet or kudzu.
- Perform routine care of company-owned tools and equipment (including equipment with small engines & vehicles).
- Perform proper use of pesticides and herbicides under the direction of licensed applicators (training will be provided for technicians prior to individual use).
- Serve and educate the Metro Atlanta community with a positive attitude while carrying out the Trees Atlanta mission to protect and grow the city’s canopy.
- Assist with managing groups of volunteers (3-20 people) on weekly maintenance projects.
The Youth Tree Team Senior Lead:
The Youth Tree Team is a seven-week summer work program that introduces Youth to Trees Atlanta’s mission and a variety of “Green Collar” professions. The Youth Tree Team Senior Leads part of the dual role is to serve an integral part of the facilitation of the program for both supervision and mentorship.
You'll create impact by:
- Leading and supervise the Youth Tree Team Members and Leaders In Training (a group of 50-65 high school students with diverse backgrounds and cultures) on weekly maintenance projects.
- Being involved in all aspects of the maintenance (watering, weeding and mulching) on the Atlanta BeltLine Arboretum and other Trees Atlanta sites.
- Being assigned to 1-2 Leaders in Training for direct mentorship.
- Assisting with various maintenance projects: watering, mulching, and weeding.
- Assisting with the coordination of logistics for Youth Tree Team lunches, field trips, and lunch and learns. Acting responsibly as an ambassador for Trees Atlanta while out on worksites.
- Conducting student evaluations.
- Monitoring smaller groups during enrichment day field trips.
What you need:
- Be 21 or older to drive Trees Atlanta vehicles (must have a valid driver’s license with at least a 3-year clear driving history).
- Have an interest or experience in working or learning about Environmental Conservation, Education (secondary, post-secondary, outdoor), Landscape Architecture, Forestry, Forestry, or Horticulture.
- Be comfortable working outside in all weather conditions in a physically demanding environment with much bending, lifting (30-50 lbs), and shoveling.
- Preferred experience driving a 12-15 passenger van or box trucks.
- Have an updated tetanus shot.
