Position Overview:
This role plays a critical part in managing and optimizing the company's fleet operations by collaborating with cross-functional teams. The Fleet Manager is accountable for ensuring the compliance, performance, and cost-efficiency of the organization's vehicle assets, including planning, tracking, and managing expenses related to ownership, leasing, or rentals. This position requires strategic thinking and operational expertise to effectively maintain, analyze, and enhance fleet processes, mitigate risks, and align with organizational goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fleet Oversight & Maintenance: Supervise all activities at the Detroit fleet garage, including mechanic operations. Coordinate with third-party vendors for repairs, preventive maintenance, inspections, and diagnostics for various vehicles, including tankers, tractor-trailers, and non-DOT units.
- Operational Efficiency: Implement fleet maintenance strategies to meet budgeted costs and operational goals. Evaluate and enhance fleet processes to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Fleet Management Software: Maintain fleet software to ensure accurate tracking of repairs, maintenance schedules, safety training, and compliance with federal and state inspections.
- Stakeholder Communication: Liaise with internal departments, including dispatch and operations, to communicate vehicle statuses and proactively schedule unit maintenance.
- Performance Metrics & Reporting: Monitor and analyze fleet performance, fuel consumption, and IFTA compliance. Recommend adjustments to optimize fleet size and composition.
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations. Maintain accurate documentation for inspections, registrations, and safety standards.
- Vendor and Asset Coordination: Work with site managers to optimize asset utilization and monitor vehicle lifecycle costs.
- Incident Management: Document and review accidents, injuries, and fleet-related incidents to implement corrective actions.
- Technology Integration: Explore and implement new technologies to enhance fleet management processes.
Required Skills & Competencies:
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to balance strategic and hands-on responsibilities.
- Proven leadership capabilities, including motivating teams, setting goals, and training staff.
- Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills, with a focus on cost control and process improvement.
- Expertise in DOT regulations, fleet dispatching systems, and Great Lakes regional logistics.
- Proficiency in MS Office; experience with fleet or dispatch software is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute fleet strategies that prioritize safety, cost savings, and operational efficiency.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain, business, operations, or a related field (preferred).
- 5–7 years of experience in fleet management.
- 3–5 years of supervisory experience.
- Strong knowledge of commercial transportation laws and regulations.
- A CDL or similar vehicle operator’s license is a plus.
Travel & Work Environment:
- Travel: Up to 10% travel to Midwest company locations, including occasional overnight stays.
- Work Conditions: Frequent exposure to airborne particles, machinery, and outdoor environments. Noise levels are typically moderate, with occasional exposure to wet or humid conditions.
- Physical Requirements: Regularly required to sit, talk, hear, and handle tools. Frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 500 pounds with assistance.
