What you will be doing:
The Department of Fish and Game, Commercial Fisheries Division is seeking to hire a flexibly staffed seasonal Fisheries Biologist 1/2 to serve as the Petersburg/Wrangell Port Sampling Supervisor. The job will mainly consist of conducting sampling and directing fishery technicians in sampling commercially harvested salmon and shellfish landings as they occur at commercial seafood processors in Petersburg and Wrangell, Alaska. The port supervisor will be required to interact with commercial fishermen, processing plant workers and other ADF&G staff. This position directly supervises 5-10 seasonal Fish and Wildlife Technician's and is responsible for hiring and training these individuals. The incumbent can expect to work irregular and sometimes long hours and this position requires the flexibility to work evenings and weekends (depending on the dynamics of the fisheries).

This port sampling supervisor position assists and directs the collection of biological data from commercial salmon and shellfish landings. Data collections may include coded wire tags, fishery performance, pink sex ratios, age-length data, otoliths, genetic samples, morphometric and other biological data as directed. This information is used directly to manage State of Alaska fisheries. Some of our work is conducted as part of the Pacific Salmon Treaty and is considered the foundation on which the salmon management of Southeast Alaska is built.

The working environment you can expect:
The work is performed on docks and in the processing plants in Petersburg and Wrangell, Alaska often in cold, slippery, and wet conditions, working around moving parts and heavy equipment. Numerous sampling processes are involved, and several different sampling forms must be filled out correctly. Attention to detail and good communication skills are requirements.
Who we are looking for:
- Experience acting as a crew leader or supervisor in fisheries research or fisheries management activities.
- Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently with remote supervision.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule that will be dependent on commercial fishery openers and closures.
- Demonstrated proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and email applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite
Special Note:
- Valid Driver's license required.
- Housing and/or food is not supplied by the department as part of employment in this position.
- This position is expected to be active 11 months annually.
- The ability to collect data using either mobile electronic tablet or paper forms is a requirement.
- This position requires the incumbent to work a flexible schedule that will be dependent on commercial landings and seafood processor schedules.
- The ability to work in cold, wet, and loud conditions inside processing plants and on docks that at times will require standing while working in one place for extended periods of time is required.
- The ability to repetitively lift fish and gear up to 50 pounds and work on the docks and inside seafood processors in inclement weather is required.
