SUMMARY:
Under the direction of a shift officer, Captain, and/or Lieutenant, protect life and property through fire suppression, fire prevention, rescue, and emergency medical care. Perform work on a full-time basis in an hourly position. This position will require that the Firefighter/Paramedic or EMT work 24-hour shifts. The shifts begin at 0800 and end at 0800 the next day. The duty days and hours will be on an A-B-C shift schedule and may change at the discretion of the Director of Emergency Services / Fire Chief.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all minimum requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- High school Diploma or GED.
- EMT - Must possess current Kansas Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or higher certification.
- Paramedic - Kansas certified Paramedic (EMT-P) or obtain Kansas Paramedic certification within 180 days of hire if already certified with a National Certification or another State Certification. If currently active in a Paramedic training program must have current certification as a Kansas EMT or above and obtain Kansas Paramedic certification within 180 days of hire.
- Must be willing to attend a two (2) week firefighter I & II academy and receive certification, if not already certified.
- Must possess a valid Kansas driver's license, must be insurable with the Nation's insurance within 90 days of hire.
- Must be able to obtain a class B non-commercial license within 6 months of hire.
- Must certify at the HAZMAT Operations level within 12 months of hire.
- Must successfully complete National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-100, 200, 700, & 800 certifications within 6 months of hire.
- Must possess an ability to operate all fire department motor vehicle apparatus.
- Must possess ability to operate tools and equipment including pumps, fans, and saws.
- Must have effective interpersonal skills to maintain good working relationships with co-workers.
- Must possess ability to communicate professionally; both orally and in writing with a service-oriented approach, sometimes in stressful circumstances.
- Must possess professional work ethics, manner, and appearance.
- Must possess the ability to operate general office equipment, including but not limited to: telephones, computers, software programs, and fax/copier machines.
- Must possess a proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Must be punctual and dependable in regular attendance.
- Must be available to work a flexible schedule to meet the demands of the position.
- A record of satisfactory attendance and performance in all prior and current employment.
Physical Agility, Testing, & Interview Process (takes place on... TO BE ANNOUNCED)
CHECK IN AND ASSIGNMENT:
Enter through the front door of the fire station and check in downstairs in the basement training room. Please park in the large open parking lot located off the station grounds to the south of the station. We are located ¼ mile south of the intersection of 158th & K Road. GPS and Smartphone mapping devices are notorious for failing to properly locate our facility and providing improper directions.
If you are not checked in and present in the Fire Department Basement at 0830 hours, YOU WILL NOT be allowed to continue in the hiring process.
You are required to bring:
- Current Driver's License
- Current State of Kansas EMT or above Certification Card
No smoking or tobacco use will be allowed on Fire Department property or during testing by any applicant at any time on the date of testing. Tobacco use, wandering outside of the designated areas, and failure to follow instructions will result in immediate removal from the hiring process.
* Candidates should wear appropriate athletic clothing taking weather conditions into consideration. Each candidate will be required to sign a waiver of liability to participate in the physical agility testing.
** Interviews will be in the afternoon, you will want to change clothing, and may use the Fire Department facilities to clean up if need be. You will be assigned an interview time after successful test completion. Interviews will be in the basement of the PBPN Government Center at 16281 Q Road, Mayetta, KS 66509. Check in with Human Resources in the southwest corner of the basement upon arrival. Call HR at 785-966-3060 if you need directions.
All testing is pass / fail. Failing any station will result in immediate removal from the testing process. Testing stations may be changed or altered due to conditions on the day of testing. Testing stations may not occur in the order listed. This description is to serve as a guide only. All distances, weights, and descriptive measurements are approximate.
WRITTEN TESTING:
The written test consists of two sections: General Aptitude and EMS. Both sections are 50 questions with a minimum passing score of 75% on each and a maximum of 2 hours allowed to complete the test. Applicants may be divided into groups for testing purposes and some applicants may take the written test prior to the agility testing. The General Aptitude section covers basic core knowledge such as mathematics, mechanical aptitude, map/spatial orientation, and reading comprehension. The EMS section is either EMT or Paramedic level and is based upon standard curriculum from AHA BLS, ACLS, PHTLS, PALS, PEPP, and other nationally accepted EMS certification courses.
STATION # 1: 2 MILE FIELD TEST
The applicant will walk, jog, or run 2 miles in 30 minutes.
After the applicant has successfully completed the test, they will be allowed a 5-minute period to rest and stretch before moving on to the next evolution.
STATION # 2: 100-FOOT HOSE DRAG
The applicant will be required to drag a 1 ¾" hose line 100 feet in a straight line. The line will be charged with water at 100 psi. No running will be permitted with this evolution. If the applicant runs he or she will be disqualified from the test. Stopping forward motion and resting, dropping the line, or falling and not immediately continuing forward motion will be considered failing. You will have 5 minutes to complete the evolution.
STATION # 3: HIGH RISE PACK CLIMB
While carrying a 100-foot high rise pack of 1 ¾" hose, the applicant will be required to climb and descend a flight of stairs 3 times. The applicant must climb or descend touching each stair step during the evolution. No skipping stairs will be allowed. Once the applicant returns to the starting point after reaching the top of the stairs, the trip will be counted as 1 flight. Dropping the pack, loosing one's balance, stopping during the evolution, or falling up or down the stairs will be considered failing. You will have 5 minutes to complete the evolution.
STATION # 4: AERIAL LADDER CLIMB
The applicant will be required to climb an aerial ladder extended to approximately 50 feet at a 70-degree angle, touch the top rung, and return to the base of the ladder. Freezing on the ladder or losing one's grip on the ladder will be considered failing. The applicant will be attached to a safety line / fall arrest belay system and maintain 3 points of contact at all times to insure their safety. You will have 10 minutes to complete the evolution.
STATION # 5: MANIKIN DRAG
The applicant will be required to drag a 165-pound manikin 100 feet. The applicant will drag the manikin 50 feet in a straight line, round a cone, and return 50 feet in a straight line to the starting point. Stopping or resting (a lack of forward movement or effort to continue forward movement of the manikin) will be considered failing. You will have 5 minutes to complete this evolution. Applicants are expected to drag the manikin and are NOT to try to completely pickup or carry the manikin.
STATION # 6: SCBA CONFINED SPACE CRAWL
The applicant will be required to don a bunker coat, helmet, and a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus with a blacked-out mask. After putting the SCBA in service or "going on air" the applicant will then crawl to a confined spaced and remain there for 5 minutes. When the tester signals that time has expired the applicant will return to the testing point. If the applicant removes the SCBA mask, obviously panics, or exits the confined space before time has expired, he or she will be disqualified.
STATION # 7: EMS SCENARIO EVALUATION
The applicant will be required to evaluate a patient in an EMS scenario and treat the patient as appropriate per generally accepted standards of EMS care. This scenario is graded on a point scale based on critical criteria that need to be met and is pass/fail. You will have 15 minutes to complete the scenario.
TESTING CONCLUSION:
Please do not loiter after your testing has concluded. No spectating, cheering, or talking with applicants engaged in testing or waiting to test will be allowed. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in immediate removal from the hiring process.
