**Overview**
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is looking for a mid-level Fire Protection Engineer to be part of the Worker Safety and Heath (WS&H) group's Safety Engineering Team. In this role you will support the diverse needs of our research and operations partners by developing and deploying fire protection and life safety solutions. The role's collaborative interface with scientific projects creates an opportunity for code and risk-based analysis to support our scientific discovery mission.
Specific job functions include:
+ Implementation of laboratory-wide fire protection program
+ Deployment of fire protection and life safety code requirements within a broad range of facilities
+ Fire suppression and alarm system design and specification
+ Maintenance of technical bases for facility chemical operating boundaries
+ Fire protection support for research activities and projects
+ Fire protection support for new construction and operating facilities
+ Fire and explosion hazards analysis, risk assessment, and mitigation

**Responsibilities**
Develops and implements programs, policies and procedures for hazard evaluation of work with flammable and combustible materials to reduce the potential for personal injury or facility damage from fire. Oversees facility fire protection systems to assure that they are installed, tested, maintained and used in accordance with the applicable codes and standards. Routinely reviews the organizations fire protection standards in accordance with NFPA, ICC, DOE Orders and Standards, state regulations and contractual requirements. Maintains professional knowledge of existing and proposed changes in applicable requirements. Provides expert knowledge of application of fire protection standards to both buildings and laboratory operations.
**Qualifications**
Minimum Qualifications:
+ BS/BA and 5 years of relevant experience -OR-
+ MS/MA or higher and 3 years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Demonstrated ability to evaluate, interpret and apply Fire Protection code and standard requirements (including NFPA 13, 72 and 101).
+ Familiarity with DOE Fire Protection Standard DOE-STD-1066.
+ Experience analyzing complex fire hazards and developing complaint technical solutions for safe and effective operations.
+ Experienced in fire suppression and alarm system design; NICET II certification or equivalent.
+ Experience in facility, system, and equipment design to meet fire protection and life safety requirements.
+ Experience in AutoCAD and/or Autodesk Revit.
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
+ Proven ability to self-direct and manage a range of priorities.
+ Ability to collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to achieve goals.
**Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment**
+ Work in laboratory, facility maintenance, and construction environments.

**HSPD-12 PIV Credential Requirement**

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
