FIRE PREVENTION SPECIALIST

Job Summary:
This position is a responsible support position assigned to the Division of Fire Prevention involved in community outreach and education, field inspections, and clerical activities. The employee is responsible to and works under the general supervision and direction of the Fire Marshal and/or Deputy Fire Marshal.
Job Description:
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Obtains and maintains all certifications required to perform job duties.
- Coordinates with community partners to engage and serve in educational programs.
- Coordinates with organizations relating to the Juvenile Firesetters Program.
- Assesses and identifies underlying and unaddressed needs, to reduce reliance on community emergency services.
- Prepares and participates in community outreach programs.
- Drafts articles for print and online media, including brochures, newsletters, and other educational materials.
- May be subject to working after hours, weekends, and/or holidays as deemed necessary.
- Develops and implements a community risk reduction plan under the direction of the Fire Marshal and/or Deputy Fire Marshal.
- May participate in organizational and/or association meetings.
- Develop and administer various methods of evaluation to determine effectiveness of programs.
- Performs inspections and re-inspections as assigned.
- Investigates and reports on complaints received on matters concerning hazardous conditions or practices.
- Assists the Fire Marshal and Department Head with special projects, as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) from an U.S. Department of Education accredited institution is required.
- Experience in project management and/or program implementation is preferred.
- Experience with customer service and speaking in public.
- An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered for minimum requirements except for licensure/certification requirements.
LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.
- Possess or obtain a Fire and Life Safety Educator Certification within (1) year of hire.
- Possess or obtain a Florida Fire Safety Inspector I Certification within (1) year of hire.
- Possess or obtain a CPR instructor certification within (1) year of hire.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND LICENSES
- Certifications and/ or formal education in education, digital media, communication, public relations, or related topics is preferred.
- Training or experience in public education, code compliance, or fire inspections is preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in a public speaking forum.
- Ability to clearly and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to provide good customer service and deal with the general public in a professional, courteous manner.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, City officials, other agency officials, civic groups and the general public.
REASONING ABILITY
- Ability to interpret fire safety laws, rules and regulations, and the fire prevention code.
- Ability to work independently, efficiently, and effectively with the public on routine, stressful, or complex issues.
- Ability to evaluate data and develop methods and procedures necessary to accomplish objectives.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of fire hazards found in various types of occupancies; of characteristics and behavior of smoke and fire and their effects on human life; of storage and handling of combustible, flammable and explosive materials; of modern practices to guard against the occurrence of fire or minimize losses and the most current means of protection.
- Secure and maintain confidential or sensitive information.
- Enforce fire and life safety codes firmly, tactfully, impartially, and consistently; understand and carry out instructions or directives with minimum of supervision; adhere to prescribed routines and practices, and provide logical and constructive suggestions or recommendations of same.
- Ability to work independently and in a diligent manner.
- Good physical condition is essential.
- Ability to prepare and complete accurate accounting reports and statements of considerable complexity.
- Thorough knowledge of office terminology, procedures, routine, and equipment.
- Ability to perform complex, detailed work involving written and numeric data and to make calculations rapidly and accurately.
- Ability to use a computer, with knowledge in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long of periods of time performing repetitive functions. The employee must be able to access file cabinets for filling and retrieve data. The employee must have the ability to sit at a desk and view a screen for extended periods of time.
