Position Summary:
The Financial Counselor will be required to possess a thorough understanding of the third party payer industry combined with literacy of resources available for the uninsured and underinsured. Employee must possess effective oral and written communication skills and be able to apply these resources (i.e. Medicaid, Charity, etc.).
Duties/Responsibilities:
• Evaluates financial information on uninsured patients, those with inadequate insurance, and others identified with potential financial difficulties.
• Uses insurance verification tools to obtain benefit information to share with Patient/Case Management/Billing
• Coordinates the information obtained with Social Service personnel for their assistance to patients meeting the criteria for Kentucky Medical Assistance and other state or federal programs.
• Coordinates and screens for SCH’s charity program those patients that do not qualify for state or federal assistance.
• Counsels patients that do not qualify for assistance and tries to establish payment arrangements within SCH’s credit policy.
• Contacts individuals that have been pre-admitted to SCH to establish payment arrangements if necessary.
• Contacts patients while in-house to establish payment arrangements if necessary.
• Prepares and refers documentation on the financial information obtained to the appropriate business office personnel for future follow-up or proper disposition of the account.
• Possesses the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, allowances and percentages.
• Possesses the ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Education:
• High School Diploma or equivalent required. Some collage preferred.
Experience:
• Previous billing, coding, or registration experience required..
Licensure/Certification:
None.
