The Financial Controller works as part of the Finance Team, bringing a background of strong accounting skills to lead the preparation of monthly financial statements, ensure accurate accounting and reporting of federal and state grants management, lead the management of Avalon's real estate portfolio, and support various program staff in the analysis of grant and program financial performance.
The Financial Controller plays a critical role in providing comprehensive financial services for more than 10 legal entities to staff, partners, donors, investors and financial institutions, and the Board of Trustees.
The Financial Controller ensures that Avalon has the internal controls, systems and procedures in place to support effective financial operations and safeguard assets. The Financial Controller leads Avalon's effort to continuously improve its finance function and explore better ways to support Avalon's future growth and business planning efforts.
Core Responsibilities include:
- Oversee accounting and cash management processes to ensure accurate reporting, interpretation and analysis of financial results in conjunction with forecasts and long term plans.
- Oversee our finance team and cultivate the culture of high performance.
- Provide supervision for finance team members and guide them to achieve their professional goals and aspirations.
- Work with the Real Estate Development team to ensure accurate and timely construction cost tracking and billing for new and existing properties.
- Oversee an annual audit and tax return work for Avalon and its subsidiaries and ensure their timely completion.
- Ensure that appropriate internal controls and financial policies and procedures are in place and operating as designed.
- Work with the Services team to manage rental assistance funds and ensure 100% utilization and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Work with the Asset Management team to oversee the financial performance and ensure program compliance for real estate properties and legal entities.
- Research and resolve accounting issues including evaluation and implementation of new accounting pronouncements to ensure compliance with US GAAP.
- Lead the preparation of accurate periodic financial statements for Avalon and its subsidiaries.
- Work with other teams and departments within the organization to develop and monitor annual and multi-year budgets.
- Manage the loan portfolio.
- Maintain, update, and develop cost allocation strategy and plans.
- Provide necessary support and oversight for finance staff, interns and volunteers.
- Ensure staff are adequately cross-trained to perform all routine and essential accounting tasks.
- Provide assistance to ad hoc requests, such as drafting program budgets for grant applications, payroll questions, and urgent disbursement needs.
- Evaluate the finance team structure and system for continuously improving efficiency and effectiveness of the team.

REQUIRED Qualifications and Experience
- BS degree in Accounting (or equivalent education + experience) required; CPA and / or MBA is a plus
- At least three years experience in a financial-management role,
- Experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including federal grants management and uniform guidance single audit.
- Experience with handling the process of managing a complex general ledger to the preparation of multi-fund financial statements.
- Experience with HUD, Low Income Housing Tax Credit Program and other affordable housing funding programs.
- Advanced use of Excel, various software packages, pdf and word processing software.
- Experience with databases and document management systems.
- Experience in Real Estate accounting.
- Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong technology working knowledge to maximize the benefit of available applications and software.

Starting Pay rate: $82,000

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
Possibility of Hybrid work after 90 days.
Status: Salaried, Exempt
