The Pre-Award Financial Analyst 1 collects data and works on varied phases of financial processes and analysis relating to clinical trial budgets. The role is responsible for routine financial processes.
The position plays a crucial role in clinical research finances by ensuring that the creation of the internal budget/billing schedule, negotiation of the sponsor and supporter budget, as well as subsequent budgetary downstream impacts, are successfully managed. The Pre-Award Financial Analyst 1 helps to set the financial foundation for a clinical trial.
With assistance from Financial Analyst 2s, management and leadership, this role collaborates with Investigators and study teams to assist in feasibility analysis for clinical trials; building and maintenance of an internal budget/billing schedules; sponsor/supporter budget negotiation; development and management of finance data in OHSU’s CRMS, eCRIS; management of the departmental, clinical services, and coverage analysis approvals; as well as ongoing management of budget and contract updates due to amendments.
Key Responsibilites:
- Clinical Research – Internal Budget Development, with Unit Grants and Contracts Administrator assistance
- Assists with the preparation of budgets as assigned. Analyst examines budget estimates and proposals for completeness; accuracy; and conformance with established procedures, regulations, and organizational objectives.
- Responsible for financial compliance, regulatory, other reporting/filing to outside entities with limited complexity.
- Applies generally accepted accounting principles when working with financial data.
- Serve as primary point of contact between OHSU and external vendor, PFS Clinical.
- Collaborate with clinical research managers and investigators, as well as OHSU coders and Clinical Research Billing Office, to develop a comprehensive and accurate billing schedule/internal budget to be used in budget negotiation and creation of the eCRIS visit schedule
- Effective communication with team members as billing schedule/internal budget goes through the budget and negotiation process – manage and track any necessary changes
- Effectively document and track versions, changes, and communications throughout related to the billing schedules.
- Clinical Research – Budget Negotiation, with Analyst assistance
- Collaborate with clinical research managers and investigators to build budget for industry sponsored and IITs
- Ensure consistent and timely communication with multiple parties throughout the budget build process
- Document and track necessary budget build iterations
- Develop and manage finance data entry in OHSU’s CRMS, eCRIS
- Serve as an expert in budget build and negotiations
- Clinical Research- Communication & Collaboration, with Analyst assistance
- Collaborate with Investigators and the study team to assist with feasibility analysis, as well as budget review and approval
- Effective communication with multiple parties throughout pre-award process.
- Document and track document iterations and changes throughout the life of the study
- Track progress in Bridge Finance Dashboard throughout the pre-award process
- Serve as a pre-award resource for all study research staff
- Clinical Research- General Financial Management
- Develops policies and procedures. Performs process reviews and recommends improvements.
- Collaborate with both Pre-Award & Post Award Finance teams, as needed.
- Conduct any additional study related projects or responsibilities as assigned.
Education & experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field from an accredited college or university. If from a related field, candidate must have 18 hours of accounting courses from an accredited college or university.
- All candidates must have 1 year of professional healthcare and/or relevant financial analysis experience.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- All candidates must be proficient with the use of computers, including spreadsheet applications.
- Proficient in the use of Word, Excel, Access and other Microsoft Office programs.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of diverse doctors, nurses and other research related positions.
- Excellent record of time management and setting appropriate priorities
- Excellent communication skills; ability to express and document ideas clearly and concisely in written communications; able to champion personal convictions while maintaining the ability to listen, comprehend, and adjust, when required, to other points of view.
- Self-starter with ability to work independently but collaboratively; demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team; capable of establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with a range of individuals from a variety of departments, institutions and organizations; ability to lead a discussion, serve as a facilitator, and create a positive work environment.

Education & experience:
- Experience in clinical research pre-award finance; Knowledge or experience working in oncology;
- Knowledge or experience working in a clinical or research environment
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Experience with OHSU Financial systems, eCRIS, EPIC
- Highly skilled in MS Excel and MS Access
