About the Job
We have an immediate need for a Telecom Fiber Designer responsible for developing detailed fiber design and route plans for Outside Plant (OSP) work. The successful candidate will utilize GIS tools and fiber design software to create Fiber to the X (FTTX) designs, including Fiber to the Home, backhaul/transport fiber routes, MDU, and distribution/feeder designs.
General Duties / Key Responsibilities:
- Utilize QGIS, ArcGIS, and other GIS tools to create detailed FTTX fiber designs.
- Analyze network demand data to develop effective and efficient designs.
- Provide CAD support for fiber systems through the creation of permit plan/profile drawings, construction drawings, and conduit designs.
- Review and provide feedback on permitting prints to ensure design accuracy and cost-effectiveness.
- Communicate effectively across projects while adhering to jurisdictional requirements.
- Maintain rigorous quality control/assurance processes, including validation checks and QA/QC of fiber designs.
- Perform fiber splicing stages for design within GIS or other software programs.
- Understand easements, right-of-ways, aerial, and buried plant to facilitate the design process.
- Read and interpret maps, plats, as-builts, construction drawings, and utility records to ensure design accuracy.
- Perform other duties related to fiber-optic (or copper/coax) network designs as required.
- Perform quality assurance on other designersÂ’ work with minimal guidance.
- Exhibit an in-depth understanding of fiber architecture across multiple markets.
- Take ownership of special projects with limited supervision.
- Support the Lead Designer/Manager in training new hires and lower-level designers.
- Ensure the timely completion and delivery of fiber design projects.
- Supervise and provide feedback to designers.
- Recommend process improvements and identify training opportunities.
- Develop training materials and guide new hires.
- Perform final QA checks on lower-level and senior designersÂ’ work with little to no guidance.
- Design fiber networks independently, understanding design parameters across multiple markets and customers.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience designing fiber network solutions with a focus on FTTX networks.
- Proficient in fiber optic network design.
- At least 1 year of experience with Fiber Design Software such as QGIS, ArcMap, ArcPro, ARCGIS, AGOL, OSPInsight, 3GIS, or other GIS-based systems (preference for QGIS experience).
- Knowledge of fiber optic design-based software.
Senior Fiber Designer Qualifications:
- 2-4 years of experience in GIS and/or telecom records management.
- 3 years of experience in telecom, specifically with distributed split networks, greenfield, brownfield, and fiber splicing.
- At least 1 year of experience with centralized split networks.
Lead Fiber Designer Qualifications:
- 2-4 years of experience in GIS and telecom records.
- 4+ years of telecom experience with distributed split networks, greenfield, brownfield, and fiber splicing.
- 1+ year of experience with centralized split networks.
- 1+ year of leadership experience in a similar role.
