About the Job
The Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department is accepting applications for the position of Facilities Maintenance Technician.
This position is under the supervision of the Facilities Manager. This position includes, but is not limited to:
Under general direction, organizes, monitors, and performs facility maintenance operations; performs a variety of skilled building maintenance work, preventative maintenance, upkeep and repair of facilities and equipment.

- Ability to work in a standard office environment and to travel to different sites and locations as needed. The work of this classification entails frequent walking, standing, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of tools and equipment requiring the use of coordinative and manipulative skills.
- Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, mechanical and electrical hazards, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; incumbents may be required to respond to emergency and public calls after hours including evenings and weekends.
Required Experience and/or Qualifications:
A. Under general direction, organizes, monitors, and performs facility maintenance operations; performs a variety of skilled building maintenance work, preventative maintenance, upkeep and repair of facilities and equipment.
B. One year maintenance, building trades, or construction experience
C. Desired Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of:
a. Operations, services, and activities of a building maintenance, repair, and construction program.
b. Materials, methods, terminology, equipment and tools used in the maintenance, repair, and construction of building structures and systems including those used in performing rough and finished carpentry, plumbing, heating, electrical, mechanical, and painting work.
c. Operational characteristics of tools and equipment used in building maintenance activities.
d. Proper procedures used in the maintenance and repair of hand and power tools.
e. Basic mathematical principles.
f. Pertinent federal, state, and local codes, laws, and regulations including applicable building codes and ordinances.
g. Principles and practices of record keeping.
h. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
2. Ability to:
a. Perform skilled work in a variety of building trades.
b. Perform a full range of semi-skilled and skilled tasks involved in a variety of building maintenance, repair, and construction activities including those requiring rough and finished carpentry, plumbing, heating, electrical, mechanical, painting, and welding skills.
c. Safely drive and skillfully operate power equipment and hand tools involved in building maintenance, repair, and construction.
d. Maintain and repair a variety of tools and equipment.
e. Read and work from sketches, blue prints, or drawings.
f. Maintain records including time and material use records.
g. Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
h. Work independently in the absence of supervision.
i. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
j. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
k. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
D. Education/Degrees:
- Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D.
- Certifications/Licenses:
a. Must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Texas, with an acceptable driving record.
b. Must have a current CPR card from the American Heart Association or the ability to obtain within 30 days
Guidelines
4.01 Essential Job Functions – Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with Department Standard Operating Guidelines, including Bulletins, Memos, Safety guidelines, Personnel Handbook and Chief’s Orders.
A. Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Install new plumbing; maintain, repair, and replace plumbing systems and fixtures such as faucets, water heaters, water closets, urinals, water regulators, and pressure valves.
- Maintain, repair, and replace electrical systems including light switches, outlets, interior and exterior light fixtures, computer lines, electrical panels, and card readers; replace light bulbs.
- Install and repair door lock sets; rekey locks and padlocks; cut keys.
- Perform carpentry and trim and finish work; frame walls, doors, and windows; build or remodel offices; replace doors and windows; build or assemble cabinets, shelving, and furniture; hang, tape, and texture drywall.
- Perform painting work; prepare and paint or stain interiors, exteriors, and furniture of various materials.
- Performs welding, masonry, flooring, and general repair work on buildings and furniture.
- Operate heavy equipment as needed.
- Perform custodial duties as needed.
- Monitor and update HVAC control program.
- Maintain records of work performed.
- Order supplies and equipment for work projects.
- Work effectively with contractors; seek bid and estimates for proposed projects.
- Perform inspections and preventative maintenance of facilities and equipment.
- Prepare budget input for short and long term projects.
- Establish schedules and methods for providing facility maintenance services; identify resource needs; review needs with appropriate management.
- Participate in the development of goals and objectives as well as policies and procedures; make recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards, policies and procedures; participate in the implementation of approved policies and procedures; monitor work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.
- Assist in the preparation of various contracts, requests for proposals, and reports.
- May be responsible for maintenance, preventative maintenance and repairs to training projects, buildings, support facilities and grounds.
- May be responsible for renovation/construction of training projects.
- May be required to provide assistance to support field training sessions.
- Perform related duties as required.
Cy-Fair FD has the right to consider any combination of education and experience in determining an individual’s qualification for this position. Compensation & Benefits will be determined by Harris County ESD No. #9 Commissioners and the Cy-Fair Fire Department.
Pay Rate: $28.17/hourly
Retirement:
TCDRS 7% employee contribution, 14% employer contribution
457b Voluntary retirement account, Department contribution matches up to 3%

Medical benefits are offered thru Blue Cross Blue Shield.
HSA Plan $5000: The CFFD covers 100% of the employee premium and 90% for family. The
department makes a quarterly contribution towards the HSA account.
Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance.
The CFFD covers 90% of the employee premium and 70% for family for dental and vision.
The CFFD pays 100% of the premiums for Short Term Disability.
The CFFD pays 100% of the premiums for Long Term Disability.
The CFFD pays 100% of the premiums for a $50,000 Life Insurance policy.
Supplemental Insurance:
Aflac is available with 100% being paid by the employee.
Additional Life insurance is available with 100% being paid by the employee.
