About the Job
The Capital Area Division (CAD) of Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) seeks to hire an Explosives Engineer to with an extensive background in blasting, explosives handling, explosive testing, rock drilling, and mining, as well as experience with equipment operations and shot instrumentation. The candidate will also support testing and fielding of this equipment at various sites around the country. Specific skills needed include detonation physics, rock mechanics, blast effects, rock drilling, down-hole measurements, explosive charge design, and regulatory compliance safety. Requires ability to review requirements, develop test methodologies and designs, provide recommendations for improvements, and safely execute on time and budget. Candidate must be a self-starter and able to work independently, possess a strong work ethic with attention to detail for high quality work and show strong team leadership.
Travel will be required to support operations and maintenance. Work hours are mission dependent and often are rotating shifts. A flexible schedule will be critical to support fast moving tasks and projects.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree
- 10-12 years of relevant experience in these disciplines:
- Blaster in charge; explosives handling, regulatory compliance
- Applied rock mechanics, blast design, fragmentation analysis
- Field/remote site operations, test operations and fielding; field testing and operations
- US Citizenship is required
- Demonstrated team leader and ability to do business development/foster customer relationships
- Skilled explosives handler; expert with typical initiation systems, product handling, loading, detonation
- Demonstrated expert with strong knowledge of groundshock and airblast propagation, and typical environmental blast monitoring techniques
- Must possess strong knowledge/skills of effects of geology on explosives performance, coupling, rock fragmentation
- Ability to work a flexible schedule will be critical to support fast paced tasks and projects
- Current / active SECRET clearance with ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Project, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Masters degree
- 15+ years of relevant experience in these disciplines:
- Blaster in charge; explosives handling, regulatory compliance
- Applied rock mechanics, blast design, fragmentation analysis
- Field/remote site operations, test operations and fielding; field testing and operations
- Local state blasting certificates, CDL w/ hazmat
- Competent equipment operator; forklift; telehandler, backhoe, rock drills, bulk handling systems
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD/ArcGIS/QGIS (or similar); proficient w/ surveying techniques for site layout
- Graduate level (advanced) knowledge/education in explosives engineering/technology, particularly detonation physics, fragmentation effects, airblast and groundshock propagation and respected author/trainer in these disciplines
- Working familiarity of relevant codes; eg CTH or LS-Dyna
