Ampirical’s Substation Engineering Division has recognized national expertise in the planning and design of new substations and high voltage electrical substations and switchyards. The mixture of our talents to offer all aspects of substation/switchyard design services, our trained resources to get the job done, and technical knowledge allows us to design a multitude of solutions to fit the client’s need.
Job Summary:
The Substation Engineer works within a multi-discipline team to develop efficient and reliable design of electrical systems and components for Substation Facilities. This Engineer is accountable for developing substation electrical drawings in accordance with RFQ scope of work, ensuring constructability of design. This individual provides leadership, mentorship, and/or guidance to less experienced engineers within the department. This position is responsible for all phases of designing mid to high voltage electrical transmission, switching, and distribution substations (and stations) for the electric utility industry, permitting, and overseeing the construction of capital substation projects, and for establishing and maintaining substation material and construction standards.

The salary range for this position is starting at $100,000-$145,000 depending on relevant experience, education, and qualifications. We also offer semi-annual profit-sharing bonuses based on company profits to share in the mutual success! In the past, these have ranges between 3.5% - 11.5% of annual salary.

- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university
- 5+ years of experience engineering/designing substations within the Utilities or Energy industry
- Management and training experience preferred
- Experience with ETAP, WinIGS, IEEE 88/998
- Experience using Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, Bentley MicroStation and/or Bentley Substation software to develop 2D drawings or 3D models are a plus.
- EIT Certification preferred (not required)
- FE Certified
- Train, coach, supervise, and mentor Engineers.
- Deliver accurate designs of high voltage electrical substation components that meet industry and client standards and applicable codes.
- Perform quality reviews of electrical engineering work for both peers/sub-contractors on assigned projects.
- May act as lead Engineer and Engineer of Record for projects.
- Design substation systems and components to include general arrangement, equipment, and electrical layout, grounding, bills of material, etc.
- Prepare construction drawing packages for bids and review incoming submittals for alignment with design and constructability of methods.
- May manage the development of project proposals, bid preparation, project schedules, etc. for assigned Substation projects.
- Assist project team during construction on electrical substation issues.
- Travel to client sites/field as necessary.
- Substation Design: Perform duties associated with all phases of substation design work, including (but not limited to): station sighting, site preparation, physical and electrical facilities, electrical design, structural design, foundation design, and permitting, for station voltages through 138kV.
- Project Management: Perform team project management duties and participate on project teams where the teams are responsible for project scheduling, cost management, and coordination of all aspects of the project.
- Contract Administration: Prepare and administrate construction contracts.
- Standards and Specifications: Prepare and maintain substation material, design and construction specifications and standards, incorporating special expertise to address unique local environmental problems.
- Permitting: Ensure permitting requirements are met for projects.
- Compliance: Demonstrate compliance with applicable NERC standards as they apply to Operations. Interface with E&O workgroups to support their compliance efforts, as needed. Assist with training as required by the NERC standards.
- Communications: Maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels. Ensure smooth operations, productive communications, and effective understanding during all interpersonal contacts. Provide current and accurate information to all requesters, courteously and in a timely manner.
- Technical Support: Provide technical support to other employees and contractors to insure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of electric system.
