Nestled in San Francisco's Excelsior neighborhood on a nine-acre campus, the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living (SFCJL) is a center of excellence in providing a continuum of care. This includes the Frank Residences, which offer luxurious assisted living and memory care services; the Jewish Home and Rehabilitation Center, featuring long-term skilled nursing, short-term rehabilitation, and an acute psychiatric unit specializing in mental healthcare for older adults (age 55 and over); and the Jewish Home and Senior Living Foundation.
Grounded in the Jewish values of dignity, compassion, and community, the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living—fondly referred to in the past as "the Jewish Home"—was founded in 1871. Today, 150 years later, it continues to build upon its legacy of enriching the lives of older adults.
Position Overview:
The Executive Director reports to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and is directly responsible for the day-to-day operations of Frank Residences, which include but are not necessarily limited to, clinical and non-clinical operations, California Department of Social Services (CDSS) and other regulatory compliance, creation and maintenance of policies and procedures, and sound financial management. The Executive Director is part of the executive leadership team of the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living (SFCJL), represents Frank Residences (FR), and partners in various capacities with Board members, lay leaders, residents and family members, regulatory agencies, and community stakeholders.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Executive Director is responsible for the overall operation of Frank Residences and Byer Square through the establishment and implementation of the day-to-day management of the Community and works under the supervision of the COO and in collaboration with the SFCJL executive leadership team.
Specific duties include:
Provide the leadership necessary to fulfill the organization's vision, mission, and values and provide all the services described in the Residence and Care Agreement in a caring manner within the framework of sound fiscal management.
- Work and collaborate closely with SFCJL executive leadership to deliver industry-leading care and services to FR residents.
- Establish, with appropriate approval from the COO and SFCJL executive leadership, all operating policies and human resource policies through the corporate structure.
- Ensure that all FR policies and procedures are implemented consistently.
- Establish and maintain a collaborative and cooperative relationship with the FR Resident Council, its officers, and committees.
- Foster leadership and accountability with the FR Management team.
- Assume a key role in the strategic planning process.
- Perform duties with sensitivity and responsiveness to the needs of seniors and keep abreast of changes in the field to provide innovative services in the senior living environment.
- Responsible for planning, analyzing, managing, monitoring, and reporting on performance to the total operating budget for applicable internal departments.
- In conjunction with the Director of Wellness, lead all mock survey and auditing processes and represent the organization during survey activities.
- Oversee and evaluate the sales team to optimize census, including regularly assessing team performance through metrics and evaluations to drive continued success.
- Review complaints and grievances from residents, patients, family members, and staff; follow up as needed; and prepare written reports of the actions taken.
- Work independently and within a team on special non-recurring and ongoing projects. This includes but is not limited to planning and coordinating presentations, disseminating important information, creating materials, monitoring progress toward completion, completing inspections/audits, preparing and conducting staff training, preparing reports and presenting information, and completing research/discovery tasks.
- Proactively identify areas of opportunity and lead the development and implementation of new organizational systems and processes.
- Other duties/tasks as needed/assigned.
Community/Facility Representation Customer Service:
- Communicate with residents, patients, family members, and staff regularly, assisting with problem resolution and service recovery.
- Coordinate with Human Resources to support and maintain positive and functional union relations.
- Serve as a leader in positive culture change projects and initiatives.
- Participate in Board-related meetings, both internally and externally, as required.
Administration:
- Oversee and ensure the development and implementation of all operating policies of the Community.
- Establish high standards for the quality of services provided to residents and ensure the delivery of those services.
- Ensure that emergency procedures are established to maintain services and ensure the safety of residents and staff during a natural disaster.
- Ensure that all licensure standards are maintained, and that FR complies with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations governing continuing care retirement communities.
- Adhere to all applicable Corporate Compliance policies and procedures.
- Ensure that FR exceeds industry, state, and national standards for excellence in quality of care, resident experience, staff experience and operation.
- Ensure timely reports to senior leadership on overall operations and care and services programs, as well as specific areas of responsibility.
- Ensure that there is a designated line of authority and responsibility at all times.
- Establish an On Duty/On Call schedule for weekends and holidays. Perform on duty/on call function in rotation with other Managers.
Financial Management:
- Prepare an annual operating budget for approval by the Board and allocate the resources to carry out the community's programs and activities within the approved budget.
- Monitor the community for financial stability by providing oversight and control of revenue and expenses; provide regular financial forecasts and updates to the Board.
- Work with the COO, CFO, CEO, and Board of Trustees to ensure appropriate and effective financial management systems.
Staff Supervision and Development:
- Provide ongoing supervision, mentoring, and support with oversight for all staff and directly for the management team; ensure that the management team exemplifies and embraces the organization's vision, mission, and values.
- Ensure that all staff members provide for the needs of the residents of FR in a caring and effective manner by establishing a philosophy of good resident communication through communication vehicles between managers/supervisors and residents.
- Administer personnel policies and oversee human resource requirements.
- Encourage a professional environment that attracts, motivates, and retains quality staff.
- Maintain an open-door policy and provide full equal opportunity in all employment practice areas.
Resident Relationships:
- Address all resident and resident family issues that cannot be resolved at the department head level.
- Maintain an open-door policy for all community residents and ensure that each resident who files a verbal or written comment, complaint, or grievance receives a timely response.
- Ensure the Community operates without favoritism shown to any resident.
- Meet with the Resident Council and Committees as needed or upon residents’ request; attend Resident Council meetings and work to resolve all issues identified by the Council and Committees.
- Hold informal and formal resident meetings in conjunction with an established schedule and regulatory requirements.
Community and Business Development, Promotion and Collaboration:
- Lead efforts to realize the potential of Byer Square.
- Help develop and launch Byer Square programming led by the Strategic Planning Committee.
- Serve on committees and councils as necessary and appropriate within the industry; participate in national and local associations as appropriate; attend local and national conferences and encourage management team to attend as appropriate.
- Collaborate with the Director of Sales to develop an effective external business development strategy that maximizes referral leads and move-ins; provide mentorship and resources to the sales team to achieve key performance metrics.
- Partner with the Director of Marketing to align efforts in achieving FR’s census goals and ensure cohesive marketing and sales strategies that support the sales team in meeting established metrics for leads, tours, and move-ins.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant work experience, or a Master's degree and five years of relevant work experience.
- Working knowledge of CDSS RCFE and Continuing Care Contracts regulations.
- Active California RCFE Administrator's License.
- Desire and ability to relate well with seniors, especially as they experience changes/declines in physical and cognitive abilities.
- Successful experience in leading a complex organization and interacting with the larger community.
- Proven leadership capability and strong communication skills.
Technical Competencies:
- Thorough knowledge of administrative management techniques.
- Comprehensive knowledge of employment practices and standards as well as supervision practices, procedures, and principles.
- Thorough understanding of RCFE finances.
- Demonstrated leadership ability with professional, civic, and/or religious organizations.
- Ability to relate well to seniors and their families, staff, management team, Board of Trustees, contractors/vendors, donors, volunteers, and the general public.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work effectively and with initiative in a position requiring attention to a variety of issues simultaneously ensuring attention to detail.

Pay Range DOE, 190K-225K
