Job Description Summary

Reporting to the inaugural Vice Provost for Climate Science, Policy, and Action in the Office of the Provost, the Executive Director (ED) serves as the deputy to the Vice Provost and staff director for the office portfolio and related committees. The ED would provide high-level support for scholarship, teaching, outreach, programming, communication and physical plan initiatives as directed by the Vice Provost; from initial fact-finding through program/project design, budgetary support and implementation.

The Vice Provost for Climate Science, Policy, and Action will draw from Penn’s academic strengths in the science and policy of climate mitigation and adaptation, advance scholarship and training for future leaders, and help lead our own institutional efforts at sustainability and bring other institutions along with us. The new ED position will support and accelerate the campus-wide Climate and Sustainability Action Plan, along with major academic programs in multiple Penn schools and world-leading centers, such as the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy, Environmental Innovations Initiative, and Center for Science, Sustainability, and the Media, among others.





Job Description


Job Responsibilities



+ Program management: Preparing and updating information and materials for programs, initiatives and events. Maintain partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, faculty, FRES, UPHS and partner institutions, among others. Work closely with these partners to provide high-level support for key initiatives; serve as point person for internal and external constituents regarding climate initiatives.


+ Provide strategic input to the Vice Provost on engagement efforts - analyzing and identifying opportunities for the development of existing programs as well as identifying new opportunities.


+ Conduct in-depth research and writing; write briefings, and reports; Coordinate activities with other key departments across Penn to ensure initiatives and projects stay on task. Prepare and deliver reports to important stakeholders.


+ May oversee team, manage program budgets, and lead special projects.


+ Other duties and responsibilities as assigned





Qualifications



+ Master’s degree and 5-7 years’ experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required; 10+ years of directly relevant experience preferred.


+ Strong track record of leading cross-organizational and cross-functional initiatives involving many and varied stakeholders.


+ Experience launching programs and initiatives de novo preferred.


+ Demonstrated experience in managing complex programs and initiatives, with a track record of increasing responsibility in an organization.


+ Demonstrated track record of building internal and external relationships to advance key initiatives and strategic goals.


+ Experience leading work in climate science, policy, and/or action strongly preferred.
