How will this role impact First Command?
The Chief Legal Officer manages all legal matters within an organization. Defend the organization in lawsuits and prosecute lawsuits on behalf of the organization. Provides legal expertise to other departments where needed. Plans and directs all aspects of an organization's legal affairs and ensures maximum protection of its legal rights.Supervises the Chief Compliance Officer to ensure an effective compliance program.Administratively supervises the Chief Internal Auditor to ensure an effective internal audit program. This role also oversees other integral company departments and has supervisory responsibility for: Compliance; Internal Audit; Corporate Governance; Enterprise Risk Management; Supervision and Surveillance; and Government Relations (including First Command's PAC).
Serves as the organization’s lead officer for the development and administration of the following programs:
·Corporate Governance (including the Corporate Secretary function)
·Enterprise Risk Management
·Government Relations (including the organization’s Political Action Committee)
What will the employee do in this role?
- Assess legal documents to ensure protection of the organization
- Take part in high level planning and organizational meetings
- Manage lawsuits
- Direct and lead the Legal, Compliance and Internal Audit Department in company initiatives
- Develop, administer, and lead the following corporate programs:
- Corporate Governance (including the Corporate Secretary function)
- Enterprise Risk Management
- Government Relations (including the Political Action Committee)
- Ensure all legal formalities (tax payments, assets maintenance, agreements of lease and other obligations) are fulfilled in time
- Ensure that high level secrecy and privacy for all legal data is maintained for the organization
- Keep track of the latest changes in applicable laws and regulations
- Manage and lead the Legal, Compliance and Internal Audit Department budget
What roles will this employee lead?
Recruit, hire, lead and mentor direct reports including the Chief Compliance Officer, the Chief Internal Auditor, and all in-house attorneys
What skills/qualifications do you need?
Education
§Bachelor’s Degree (required)
§Juris Doctor Degree (required)
Work Experience
·At least 15 years’ experience practicing law, with at least 5 years’ experience leading a corporate law department or group of attorneys within a corporate law department.At least 5 years’ experience in the financial services industry.
Certifications
·Member in good standing of the Bar of any state Supreme Court or U.S. District or Circuit Appeals Court (required).
·Active affiliation with appropriate financial services legal/compliance/risk management networks and organizations is required
