Summary
The estimator functions as the primary estimator to provide accurate bid proposals and scope analysis for potential projects, including pricing estimates on new projects and estimate prices on change orders on existing contracts. The Estimator reviews, analyzes, and interprets contract documents (specifications, drawings, and reference information) to develop detailed and comprehensive project cost estimates and exercises sound judgment to arrive at the complete cost estimate with appropriate profit margins to achieve division goals.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Estimating:
- Reviews contractual requirements, specifications, and drawings and develops a plan for the project construction to be utilized as the basis of the cost estimating process.
- Accurately conducts a thorough and detailed project take-off to quantify all items in the scope.
- Creates the complete estimate accounting for all aspects of the scope of work, including correct alternates, general conditions, inputting valid vendor and subcontractor pricing, materials and equipment costs, and proper labor production and wage rates aligned with the bid strategy.?
- Solicits subcontractor and supplier pricing, reviewing prequalification requirements, and determining the best-qualified subcontractors.
- Identifies project-specific risk issues, the potential impact on Kent Companies, and potential strategies to help mitigate those risks.
- Prepare accurate and comprehensive proposals, including durations, assumptions, a complete list of exclusions, and all required documentation for submission.
- Follow up with each customer the next business day to gather feedback on pricing and scope (postmortem), promote the Kent differentiators, and request a meeting with each customer to discuss how Kent can provide value to the project.
- Provide timely follow-up, closure, and tracking of all identified opportunities.
- Participate in post-bid interviews when requested to provide accurate details about the scope, sequence, assumptions, expectations, and exclusions.?
- Preconstruction
- Ensures pertinent information is collected and timely follow-ups are executed to close the internal and external loop.
- Establishes and maintains robust relationships with customers, vendors, subcontractors, and key stakeholders.
- Identifies competitive edge and risks to each project; communicates and evaluates with the division manager.
- Assists with the "project hand-off" to the project management and field operations team to ensure a clear understanding of project scope, build assumptions, schedule, and manpower assumptions.

Work Environment/Physical Demand
This position works in a typical office environment and requires extended periods of sitting.
Position type and expected hours of work
This is a full-time office position. Typical hours will range from 45-50 hours per week and are subject to change. This role requires working nontypical days and irregular hours based on construction schedules. Due to the critical nature of the role, accepting phone calls even during nontypical workdays and hours is also necessary.
Travel
This position requires travel in Central Texas with minimal overnight travel.

Required experience, qualifications, and education
- Bachelor's degree in construction management or engineering, or 5+ years of concrete estimating experience, along with five years in a leadership capacity.
- Proven experience managing concrete preconstruction processes.
- In-depth knowledge of construction principles/practices required.
- Experience building relationships and working with subcontractors and vendors.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
