DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
The Learning and Development team is responsible for empowering staff and player growth and developing their knowledge and skills to drive better performance and positively impact on-field outcomes. Its programming is designed to respond to the true needs of the organization, as established through rigorous learning needs assessment that identifies skills gaps and the learning interventions that fill those gaps.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Boston Red Sox offers international baseball players who are English Learners (EL) with resources in instruction in reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills to increase proficiency in English. The purpose of the program is to help players obtain rapid proficiency in English to help with their development as baseball players and to provide instruction which satisfies their personal growth with cultural and linguistic needs of players so they can easily navigate their international careers in the US.
This is a part-time position located on-site in Salem, VA. The hired candidate should expect to work 10-15 hours per week.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Create lesson plans for in-person and on-line classes
- Design and teach content to increase English proficiency in all four domains (Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening)
- Track student progress (Attendance, English Level Assessment)
- Offer extra support to struggling students
- Work with baseball operation staff to coordinate player schedules
- Report progress of student using data and narrative (Attendance, English Levels, Student narrative on progress)
- Encourage students to use resources outside of the classroom
- Meet 3x a year (virtually) with teachers across affiliates to coordinate alignment efforts.

- Demonstrated command of the language teaching process and the target language (English).
- Ability to create an inclusive classroom environment for students of all learning backgrounds and abilities.
- Ability to manage and maintain a classroom of adult learners in order to ensure that students remain motivated and engage in the curriculum in the intended way.
- Assesses a student’s individual language abilities accurately and provide feedback that promotes growth.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in teaching and/or English required/master’s degree preferred
- Spanish/English Fluency
- Experience teaching English as a second language to adolescents and adults
- High level of integrity and professionalism
- Prior experience in professional sports or elite athletes preferred
