Team Profile
The Value Equity Team manages approximately $9B billion in assets under management. The team is dedicated solely to our value equity strategies and maintains a culture that encourages diverse opinions and empowers analysts. The team dynamic emphasizes lively professional debate and embraces combatting common investment biases and thinking long-term on behalf of our clients.
The Role
The Boston-based group is looking for a thoughtful and successful investor to join the team. This investor should possess a demonstrable philosophy and process that has led to a successful career investing in equity securities. The analyst will be expected to evaluate and recommend public equity investment opportunities across large and mid-sized companies.
- Generate strong and consistent alpha applying a bottom-up, fundamental investment process.
- Sector coverage is dependent on the candidate as we are foremost looking for a great investor to join the team. Ideally, the candidate would evidence experience in one or more of the following sectors: energy, utilities, basic materials, and/or real estate.
- Initiate and sustain high-quality fundamental equity analysis of publicly traded securities.
- Effectively communicate investment recommendations on individual securities, as well as provide views on the attractiveness of relevant industries.
- Appropriately represent the Value team and Morgan Stanley Investment Management in developing and maintaining corporate and investor relationships.
- Develop proprietary investment insights from non-traditional data sources including:
a. financially material ESG data (collaborating with colleagues at Calvert)
b. cross-asset class investment insights (collaborating with colleagues in MSIM's Income Group)
c. non-traditional big data" tools (collaborating with MSIM's data science and risk teams)
- Diligently document all recommendations and updates, including price targets.
- Develop and maintain excellent internal working relationships with analysts on the other equity, fixed income, and Calvert teams of MSIM in order to facilitate the sharing and debate of relevant information and investment ideas.
- Proactively participate in all team meetings, taking a holistic view of portfolios, and actively participating in debate of securities across all sectors.
Job Requirements
- Master's degree and/or CFA preferred.
- Minimum of 8 years buy-side investment experience.
- Consistently strong alpha generator with a demonstrable track record.
- Comfort in engaging in active debate with colleagues regarding investment opportunities.
- Sound judgment and willingness to take appropriate investment risk.
- Superior understanding of securities analysis, accounting, valuation methods, qualitative and quantitative techniques.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work well independently and as a member of a team, which includes the ability to be flexible and adaptable.
- Highly ethical.
