Founded in 2004, OVE services the utility industry with installation and maintenance for underground electrical and communications infrastructures. OVE’s full-service excavation capacities span commercial and industrial construction as well as emergency repairs, with experience across the private and public sectors in Ohio and the Midwest.
We are seeking operators to join our growing team. The operator will be responsible for performing their job duties safely and professionally. The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience in the construction industry. Being an operator at Ohio Valley Excavating will require you to be able to understand the preventative checklist before starting your shift, understand safe operating procedures, and proper operation of said equipment. You must understand the limits and requirements for each piece of equipment you are operating along with daily preventative maintenance. Must also have experience in trench protection. Must have a valid driver’s license and pass a pre-employment drug screening. The operator will be responsible to get to various job sites throughout the area and must be willing to work on a crew assisting and leading in construction activities.
- Communication with the PMs, foreman, crew leaders, and labors
- Operate various tamping machines as per specifications
- Inspect equipment, perform everyday maintenance and fill out inspection sheets
- Loading and unloading Jobsite materials
- Maintain a neat and clean work area
- Inspect and operate hand tools for various activities
- Operate (but not limited to) track-hoe, back-hoe, mini excavator, skid steer, dozer, and haul trucks
- Excavate and backfill, in a safe manner, trenches for proposed underground utilities
- Ability to operate around live utilities in a safe and cautious manner
- Ability to work with hand signals from the labor
- Know shoring systems and how to use them
- Rigging and setting of structures
- Along with operating must be willing to assist in other activities such as but not limited to:
- Placement of conduit in open trenches
- Proofing conduits
- Potholing existing utilities
- Forming and pouring of concrete
- Placement of asphalt
- Maintain safety of company vehicles and ensured optimal utilization
- Ensure compliance with customer requirements and completed activities
- Observe and promote safety compliance
- Complete 20 hours of OVE required safety training annually
- Participate in random drug screenings
- Report injuries and other accidents to foreman and or PM
- Ensure the site is clean and organized at the end of each shift
- Coordinate daily tasks according to specs and plans
- Perform scope of work and recognize work done outside of the scope
- Emphasize safe use of tools and equipment
- Minimum of 3 years of experience and knowledge in operating equipment for underground utility construction
- Ability to work with and assist crew in hoisting material, structures, tools, equipment, and any related work
- Experience and knowledge of basic shoring methods
- Customer service skills to communicate with inspectors, crew, and administration to develop a positive working relationship
- Speaking skills for providing clear orders to employees, as needed
- Technical skills for interpreting construction methods, specifications, and drawings
- History of working successfully with a team to complete a common goal, “team player”
- Time management skills to meet deadlines
- Writing skills to document everyday reporting
- Knowledge and experience in how to read and understand blueprints
- In-depth knowledge of OSHA guidelines, equipment, and construction procedures
- High school or equivalent education
- Valid Driver’s license with a good driving record
- subject to a pre-employment drug test and MVR
- Ability to follow instruction
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact with the crew, leadership, and clients
- Must be able to meet physical demands of the position; ability to lift to 75 pounds
- Excellent vision or the use of prescription lenses
- Exceptional manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
- Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods in unfavorable weather conditions
- Provide suggestions for continued improvement
- Minimum of 5 years of operating equipment
- Experience in excavating around live utilities
- CDL driver’s license
- Computer skills
- OSHA 30 and trench/excavation safety training / competent person training
