**Class A or B CDL Required**
**The first two years of this position will be in the Environmental Services Division; performing recycling duties on the back of our recycling truck**
*On-call overtime hours expected during the winter season*
This position requires an individual to perform a variety of physical labor activities using all the departmental equipment either as a direct operator or assisting in the operation of heavy equipment. In addition, this position is responsible for the maintenance of parks and related off street public and private properties. An individual in this classification performs activities within departmental guidelines. Under the direction of a crew leader or other supervisor, the individual completes tasks as assigned using methods and procedures as set forth by the department.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Works in strenuously physical conditions to include extreme cold or heat, inclement weather and night conditions for periods in excess of eight hours
- Exposure to material and equipment that requires specific and detailed safety use to prevent physical injury to self and others as provided in a standard body of safety rules and regulations
DUTIES
Streets Division
- Operates departmental equipment from small hand tools to five yard dump trucks with snow plows and salters in simultaneous operation with a GVW if 25,000 pounds or more
- Maintains and repairs City properties, streets and infrastructure to include, but not limited to, snow plowing, salting, patching of streets, cement repairs alley maintenance, drainage maintenance, mowing berms and brush and leaf pickup
- Rebuilds/constructs structures such as sidewalks, street curbs, guard rails, manholes, drainage basins and similar items
- Removes hazards from streets such as trees, trash, chemical spills and vehicular accident material
- Places and removes emergency street signs and barriers
Environmental Services Division
- Drives a collection vehicle over a designated route, picking up solid waste containers, including recyclables or yard waste as assigned, and depositing the containers into a collection vehicle, and returning containers to the prescribed area; makes special collections as assigned
- Notes variances to prescribed service
- Observes surrounding conditions such as citizens, equipment, property, etc., in order to ensure that solid waste is collected in a safe manner; regulates traffic in hazardous conditions in order to ensure safety conditions for the collection personnel and the general public
- Drives vehicle to material recovery facility or compost facility and unloads collection vehicle; makes records of delivery
- Responds to complaints at the curb; resolves complaints within scope of authority; explains actions to supervisor
Forestry Worker
- Maintenance of the City trees to include removal, trimming, planting, disease control and stump removal.
- Performs related work within the general knowledge, skills and abilities set forth.
Parks Maintenance Divisions
- Maintenance of City trees to include removal, trimming, planting, disease control and stump removal
- Maintenance of City parks to include mowing of grass, seeding, leaf removal, ball field maintenance and field marking, facility/play equipment repair and maintenance
- Performs routine City building maintenance, and maintenance at City building/property sites including mowing and snow and ice removal
- Performs private property protection as ordered by the code enforcement officer to include boarding or buildings and site cleaning such as mowing and trash removal
- Prepares parks for public and private activities
- Installs new park equipment
- Maintains park buildings to include regular cleaning, painting, fixture repairs and replacement
- Performs related work as assigned within the general knowledge, skills and abilities set forth
All Divisions
- Performs a daily visual inspection of assigned vehicle and assigned equipment, and refers obvious defects and needed repairs to supervisor, prior to the execution of daily tasks
- Washes vehicles and equipment as assigned
- Maintains proper radio or other communications with the office to receive or report variances to standard operations
- Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards
- Responds to emergencies at all hours and in any weather condition
- Performs related work as assigned within the general knowledge, skills and abilities set forth
QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
A high school diploma or equivalent, and one year of experience in the Department, or the equivalent combination of experience and training to provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver's license, with a CDL Class B endorsement
- Knowledge of basic maintenance and repair
- Knowledge of basic chemical compounds, gases and mixture hazards
- Knowledge of City street system and municipal park and general properties
- Ability to perform the operation and care of equipment where multiple, simultaneous tasks are required
- Ability to work at heights not to exceed 100 feet
- Ability to read and write instructions and safety manuals
- Ability to lift and carry materials in excess of 50 pounds while in a bending, stooping or other nonupright position on a frequent basis
- Ability to tolerate physical stress for driving or walking in excess of eight hours/day
- Ability to work alone or in a small work group
- Ability to communicate with citizens and supervisors to discuss work activity
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, municipal officials and the general public
