JOB SUMMARY:
This position is assigned to the Department of Public Works and is responsible for the operation of various types of equipment and vehicles utilized in the provision of city services related to streets, parks, facility maintenance, solid waste and utilities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Operates backhoe, front end loader, roller, 20 cubic yd. garbage truck, dump truck, skid loader and other equipment and tools used in solid waste collection, street, alley and drainage maintenance and construction
- Supervises, schedules and participates in daily activities of staff assigned to provide a wide range of departmental services
- Advises supervisor of needed repairs to equipment or needed equipment; performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment
- Performs maintenance and repairs on water and wastewater systems as directed
- Attends and participates in monthly safety meetings
- Schedules major repairs or work activities when directed
- Drives on assigned collection routes on which household garbage, trash, recyclable materials and brush are collected, and transports solid waste to disposal site
- Maintains assigned vehicle(s) in a clean, safe and operable condition
- May be required to do occasional trimming of trees and other vegetation
- Cleans streets and low water crossings when needed
- Responds to after-hours calls whether scheduled or not
- Assist other departments as directed
- Performs other duties as assigned
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Experience in grounds maintenance and landscaping
- Training in one or more of the following related areas: landscaping and grounds maintenance and small engine repair and maintenance
- Minimum two years supervisory experience
- High school diploma or G.E.D. preferred but not required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of safety practices and requirements of the job
- Ability to work well with others
- Ability to use of landscaping and grounds maintenance, with preference for operation of vehicles that requires a Texas Class B CDL
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES:
- Valid Texas Class C driver license; Texas Class B CDL required within six (6) months of employment
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 40 pounds on a regular basis
- Visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate tools and equipment associated with the job
- Must be able to pass a drug and/or alcohol screen
- Working conditions are in a field environment
