GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This is skilled work of journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel driven automotive and related equipment as well as welding work in metal fabrication and repair. Performs journeyman tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles, light and heavy- duty trucks, tractors, graders, lawn mowers, fire trucks and pumps, hydraulic and electrical equipment. Work involves the use of acetylene and electrical equipment, welding and cutting of metals in accordance with standard trade practices. Works under general supervision of the Fleet Superintendent & Shop Foreman using independent judgment and initiative as to method of repair after receiving the repair work order. Work is reviewed through observation, conversation and evaluation of results achieved.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and techniques used in the repair of light and heavy-duty automotive equipment.
- Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment, heavy equipment and electrical equipment. Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Skill in the use and operations of tools and machinery used in automotive and heavy equipment repair work.
- Work requires constant standing, walking, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, digging, speaking and hearing. Occasional sitting and climbing.
- Very frequent lifting (20-40 lbs.) reaching overhead, kneeling, crawling, detailed inspection, reading, editing and frequent writing.
- Work involves frequent exposure to heights, confined areas, excessive noise and occasional noxious fumes, chemicals and insects.
- Performs any other duties or tasks that may be assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Does complete overhaul and repair work on different types of gas- and diesel-powered automotive equipment ranging from lawn mowers and police cars to heavy-duty construction equipment including fire trucks and heavy-duty sanitation trucks.
- Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts including valves, pistons, piston rings, brakes, air brakes, main bearing assembly, cooling, ignition and fuel systems.
- Repairs and overhauls transmissions, hydraulic systems and other specialized related equipment.
- Performs equipment service tasks such as lubrication, changes oil and filters, adding and/or changing transmission and differential lubricants.
- Does welding work incidental to completion of repair assignments.
- Uses hand tools and modern mechanical power tools in performing tasks.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduation from high school, vocational school or recognized equivalent certification. A.S.E. certification preferred.
- Three (3) years' experience as an automotive/heavy equipment mechanic at the journeyman level.
- Must possess a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver's License class B or better.
EQUIPMENT USED
Automated collection truck, front-end loader truck, rear-end loader truck, claw truck, radio and various hand tools.

All city owned buildings and facilities, all city owned land, city streets, all city rights of way and any location needed within the Apopka Urban Service Area.
