Summary:
The Environmental Manager is a key member of the plant leadership team, focusing on ensuring effective management of environmental systems while maintaining a safe workplace and compliance with applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations in a multi-shift, 24/7 operation. The role also involves a strong relationship with division and corporate environmental leaders.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee and maintain environmental compliance for a manufacturing facility, including air permitting, water pollution prevention, solid and hazardous waste management, spill prevention and countermeasures, emergency response management, and environmental training programs.
- Manage the environmental budget and support productivity improvements.
- Review and approve capital expenditures for environmental initiatives.
- Provide technical and regulatory compliance support to the plant, representing the company with state and federal agencies as required.
- Ensure operating permits are in order for all sources of air emissions, performing daily monitoring and interpreting alarms for potential air permit deviations.
- Maintain and update plans as required by air permits and environmental regulations.
- Write and review procedures for employees to follow environmental program requirements.
- Maintain knowledge of regulations from government agencies and ensure compliance.
- Manage hazardous waste disposal and lead efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle materials.
- Perform inspections, reporting nonconformance with environmental programs, and follow up with corrective actions.
- Coordinate plant-wide environmental audits, analyze results, and complete action items.
- Develop and implement employee training programs on environmental compliance and emergency preparedness.
- Conduct root cause analysis for environmental concerns and support corrective actions.
- Foster a culture of safety and environmental stewardship by working with the team to meet business goals.
- Support the plant's safety committee and participate in emergency response planning.
- Cross-train with the Health & Safety Manager to provide support and back-up for each other as needed.
- Participate in management meetings and complete all assigned duties with a strong focus on safety and environmental responsibility.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering or related field with a minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental programs and regulatory compliance in a manufacturing environment.
- In-depth knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental regulations (e.g., 40 CFR, 49 CFR).
- Proven leadership skills to manage personnel and processes within regulatory standards.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence a multi-discipline team and management.
- Demonstrated capability in implementing plans and executing projects to meet milestones in a timely manner.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access).
- Experience with environmental compliance programs, hazardous waste management, and air quality control.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, interfacing with all levels of the organization.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- ISO 14001 experience.
- Title V experience.
- SAP experience.
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing principles.
- Prior safety-specific training (e.g., OSHA 30 Hour, Confined Space).
- Experience with public speaking or training.
- Root-cause analysis skills (e.g., RCCA, 5-Whys).
Physical Demands:
- Ability to reach all work areas in the plant, including climbing ladders, negotiating catwalks, and handling heights up to 50 feet.
- Ability to lift, twist, and turn up to 50 lbs., including tasks like opening and closing large valves and inspecting equipment.
