Job Description:
This role is 50% EHS duties and 50% hands on lab tech work.
Required experience/skills (2-3 years minimum):
• Work experience in a lab environment
• Working knowledge of hazardous waste segregation and RCRA regulations
• Experience in hazardous waste disposal
• Work experience in high temperature processes (hot work)
This role will provide day to day support for the Materials Laboratory in the Decker Engineering building. The responsibilities for this job are somewhat evenly split between Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) duties and hands-on experimental support work within the lab. By utilizing inspection scheduling and incident response tracking software, the successful applicant will help management ensure the safety of others working in the lab, and that regulatory requirements are met. Additional duties include assistance with the various materials testing procedures and maintenance activities related to lab equipment. In summary, provide support and rigor for environmental, safety and project objectives applicable to lab functions.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
• Support Lab management in safety related matters
• Conduct inspections of safety related items on a reoccurring basis
• Input inspection findings within Gensuite EHS software
• Discuss all inspection findings with management and help with follow-on actions
• Inspect hazardous waste operations
• Work with building managers to support hazardous waste labeling and removal
• Input new chemicals and removal of discarded chemicals from inventory
• Complete required safety training and obtain required certifications as needed
• Assist lab personnel in carrying out routine materials testing
• Work with internal customers to design and conduct high temperature materials experiments
• Abide by all applicable safety and health requirements
Required Education:
• AS/AAS
Required Skills:
• Experience with hazard identification
• Experience performing inspections and audits
• Proficient with Microsoft applications
• Knowledge of OSHA 1910 standards
• Hands-on experience with equipment and machines
• Good written and verbal communications
Desired Experience / Qualifications / Skills:
• Work experience in a lab environment
• Working knowledge of hazardous waste segregation and RCRA regulations
• Experience in hazardous waste disposal
• Work experience in high temperature processes (hot work)
Required Experience:
• Minimum 2-3 years' experience in Environmental Health and Safety field (or similar) or advanced Lab Tech experience by someone with demonstrated knowledge of lab safety practices willing to train in EHS duties.
Soft Skills:
• Ability to perform assigned task with minimum oversight
• Ability to interface and communicate with lab staff and management
• Attention to detail and time management
• Approachable, positive demeanor - able to effectively collaborate with engineers and lab technicians
*Because the EHS portion of this job is ~50%, with the remaining portion being more closely aligned to standard lab technician work, we would consider a more-experienced materials, mechanical or chemical tech if the option to train the applicant (in needed EHS skills) seemed probable.
