Summary:
The CNC programmer is a member of the product development team who is involved with several elements of product development. The primary element is translating engineering solid models into machine code for the lathe and mill. A second element is supervising the CNC operators to make sure they are helping with the most important activities. A third element is coordinating material needed for prototyping to minimize material as a bottleneck in the development cycle. Other activities frequently change on a day to day basis, and they are dependent upon the product development phase. The CNC programmer is expected to be able to contribute as an engineering technician or engineer on a regular basis when the CNC programming workload is accomplished.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Develop CNC mill and lathe code to machine prototype and production components using Solidworks and Camworks software.
- Oversee the transfer of CNC code and associated fixtures to production.
- Work with production machine shop to insure components can be manufactured efficiently.
- Design fixtures required to manufacture components using Solidworks or hand drafting.
- Coordinate ordering of raw materials for prototype components.
- Coordinate inventory and ordering of tools required to manufacture prototype components.
- Assist prototype shop supervisor in coordinating CNC machinists and equipment scheduling.
- Other duties as required.
Essential Skills Required:
- Experience using CNC lathe, mill, and shop metal fabrication tools
- 1+ year experience with Solidworks and Camworks or similar CAD/CAM combination.
- Ability to use personal computers for documentation and material ordering
- Strong ability to solve technical problems in product fabrication
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Ability to provide operator supervision
- High School Diploma or equivalent
Physical Demands of the Job:
The minimum physical requirements needed to perform this job include:
- Ability to stand, sit, use hands, fingers and arms 1/3 to 2/3 of the time
- Ability to walk, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl under 1/3 of the time.
- Ability to talk and hear on a regular basis
- Ability to lift 10 pounds to 25 lbs.1/3 to 2/3 of the time and 25 more than 100 lbs. under 1/3 of the time.
- Vision ability including both close and distance vision while being able to distinguish colors and bring them into focus. Depth Perception (three-dimensional vision), ability to judge distances and spatial relations
- Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus)
Work Environment:
Exposure to the following environmental conditions may apply:
- Working near moving mechanical parts, wet or humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration under 1/3 of the time
- Moderate noises (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic).
