About the Job
In the role as an Area Engineering Manager, you will provide support to both the Viceroy Washington DC as well as the Hotel Zena.
The Area Engineering Manager will report directly to the Area Director of Engineering. He/ She will maintain the entire hotel facility, including the physical building structure, all mechanical, electrical, Fire Life Safety, HVAC systems, and related equipment under energy conservation and preventative maintenance programs. He/ She will ensure the upkeep of guest areas to maintain an attractive hotel. The Area Engineering Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the engineering division. In the absence of the Area Director of Engineering, the Area Engineering Manager will assume the administrative, financial, and operating aspects of the hotel as they relate to engineering.
Responsibilities
- Assist in developing and implementing plans to maintain property, equipment, grounds, and other assets in a safe and acceptable state of repair.
- Ensure the hotel complies with all local, state, and federal laws.
- Supervise and train all Engineering staff in Customer Service, Empowerment, Standard Operating Procedures, and Loss Prevention.
- Create and post all Engineering staff schedules.
- Create and adhere to the annual budget for the department.
- Assist in developing financial forecasts and actively participate in monthly profit/loss review meetings.
- Create and implement a preventative maintenance program for all hotel equipment.
- Ensure all emergency and life safety equipment and systems are inspected, tested, and certified per Viceroy standards.
- Actively participate in energy conservation programs.
- Review all guest and meeting planner comment cards to ensure problems are identified and corrected on time.
- Ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- Assist with the administration of all vendor contracts controlled by the engineering department.
- Ensure that room maintenance requests are handled promptly and courteously.
- Follow up on all alarms immediately to determine the exact location and cause. Determine emergency status and report findings to the Front Desk. Take immediate action as necessary.
- Assist as necessary with special projects and renovations.
- Conduct regular walk through and visually assess the safe and efficient maintenance and operation of the physical structure(s) of the hotel, all mechanical, electrical, HVAC systems and any other related equipment
- Verify completion of all routine maintenance on public spaces, meeting rooms, ballrooms, outlets, back-of-the-house spaces, guest rooms, and grounds.
- Verify completion of all repairs, replacements, and renovation projects within the Hotel.
- Adhere to all corporate-required purchasing policies and controls, including but not limited to all outside contractor bids, budgets, and schedules.
- Follow prescribed safety procedures for personnel and equipment by the company and OSHA.
- Lead in the hiring, training, supervising, and disciplining of department staff and all other staff under the direction of the Engineering department.
- Maintain effective Energy Management and Preventive Maintenance programs and conduct special training for other operating departments on the safe and efficient use of equipment and energy in the hotel.
- Inform the General Manager and Hotel department heads on a regular basis regarding the specific and overall condition of the building structure(s), related systems, and equipment offering prudent, cost-effective proposals for maintaining these systems. Access and input information into a computer and generate reports.
- Strategically plan and lead the engineering department in delivering high-quality service interactions and tasks that will lead to high guest satisfaction scores.
- Must be fluent in English
- Must be able to effectively manage a monthly checkbook budget and put together proposals for needed capital expenditures.
Qualifications:
- At least 3 years of progressive facilities management experience in a hotel or a related field; or a 2-year college degree and 1 year of related management experience.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Stationary Engineer’s license if required by local code.
- HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boiler operations, and general maintenance skills required.
- Long hours are sometimes required.
- Heavy work – Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, /or 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
- Always maintain a warm and friendly demeanor.
- Must be able to effectively communicate both verbally and written, with all levels of employees and guests in an attentive, friendly, courteous, and service-oriented manner.
- Must be effective at listening to, understanding, and clarifying concerns raised by employees and guests.

- Attend all hotel-required meetings and trainings.
- Participate in M.O.D. coverage as required.
- Maintain regular attendance in compliance with Highgate Hotel Standards, as required by scheduling, which will vary according to the needs of the hotel.
- Maintain high standards of personal appearance and grooming, which include wearing nametags.
- Comply with Viceroy Standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient hotel operations.
- Maximize efforts towards productivity, identify problem areas, and assist in implementing solutions.
- Must be effective in handling problems, including anticipating, preventing, identifying and solving problems as necessary.
- Must be able to understand and evaluate complex information, data, etc. from various sources to meet appropriate objectives.
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information.
- Perform other duties as requested by management.
Anticipated Salary Range: $70,000-75,000 annually
