Job Description
HII – Mission Technologies provides support to the Naval Research Lab for their work in Pulsed Power and Plasma Science Research and Development. This includes performing on-site experimental and theoretical research in pulsed-power physics and engineering, plasma physics, intense laser and charged-particle-beam physics, radiation production and transport, electromagnetic-launcher technology, the physics of low-energy nuclear reactions (<20 MeV), the physics of advanced energetics, production of high-power microwave sources, and the development of new techniques to diagnose and advance these experiments.
The intern candidate will be an HII – Mission Technologies employee but report daily to NRL on the Maryland side of the Potomac near the southernmost part of Washington DC. The candidate will support plasma physics research into phases of atomic and molecular, nuclear, solid state, thermal, and other physical phenomena. They will help to develop theories and laws based on observed results of experiments and predicts phenomena based on theoretical considerations in areas of application such as acoustics, electricity and magnetism, electronics, heat, light, mechanics, radiation, optics, and lasers.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Internships are available to help students gain real-world experience in the work force. The intern will actively contribute to meaningful projects and work closely with a mentor and with senior leadership. Support the Engineering team with engineering functions in one or more of the following specialties: electronics, electrical, mechanical, civil, naval, and/or chemical. Assist with troubleshooting issues and provide technical support.
Minimum Qualifications
+ High School Diploma or equivalent + Must be working towards a Bachelor's degree with between 40% and 60% of the required credits completed in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics fields.
+ Minimum grade point average of 3.0 out of 4.0 (unweighted)
+ Experience with hardware & computer engineering
+ Ability to participate in team-based research and development with close coordination by mentor,
+ Ability to communicate orally and in written reports to support peer-reviewed publications.
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance
Preferred Requirements
+ Enrollment in in an official cooperative education/training program at their secondary school
+ Self-starter. Seizes opportunities to initiate and take ownership of projects and improvements. Eager to broaden range of responsibilities.
Physical Requirements
Job performance will normally require only minor lifting and carrying of boxes of records or equipment.
