What you will be doing:
Engineering Assistant 1
Under the immediate supervision of a higher-level engineer, the Engineering Assistant 1 perform a variety of entry/trainee level professional engineering duties. The main purpose of the Engineering Assistant I position is training and development towards becoming a Project Engineer, the Department’s representative responsible for all aspects of onsite administration of a construction project. Within the first twelve months as an Engineering Assistant, I the position has worked on at least one active construction project and demonstrates competence in some of the primary work activities as outlined in the training plan and developed the knowledge, skills, and abilities for advancement to Engineering Assistant 2.
Engineering Assistant 2
Under general supervision of the Project Engineer, this position performs a variety of basic engineering duties by selecting and applying accepted and standard engineering practices. Duties include serving as Project Engineer for low or medium-level complexity projects and Assistant Project Engineer on more complex projects.
The position is with the onsite construction engineering team tasked with ensuring projects are constructed according to the engineering plans and specifications and will last the full design life. This requires working in partnership with designers and construction contractors to resolve issues with design, workmanship, or site conditions as they arise.

The position requires an ability to read and interpret design plans and specifications and developing well thought out engineering solutions onsite when necessary. Southcoast Region encompasses Southeast and Southwest Alaska.The working environment offers the following challenges:
- Requires being on the assigned construction project for the project duration, 4-9 months per year, in Southeast or Southwest Alaska. Paid per-diem and lodging for project assignments away from the duty station.
- Work in coastal communities.
- Some projects are accessible only by charter boat or float plane as weather permits.
- Earn overtime.
- Requires stamina to work 10 to 12 hours per day, six to seven days per week, for several months per year as dictated by construction contractor schedule.
- Projects may require working split, swing, or grave shifts.
- Work outdoors and in the office.
- Assignments can require being physically at the site of work, exposed to the elements, for the duration of the work shift.
- Assignments can require transportation by or operating small boats or ATVs.
