Job Description
HII is recognized as one of America’s top large company employers and is driven by strong values and ethics that puts people’s safety and well-being first. HII’s Mission Technologies Division develops integrated solutions that enable today’s connected, all-domain force. The Cyber, EW and Space Group provides full-spectrum capabilities that address today’s rapidly changing, multi-domain global security threats and anticipate emerging threats.
The Modeling & Simulation Systems Engineer will support a growing portfolio of analytic capabilities serving various DoD and IC customers, including the Space Warfighting Analysis Center (SWAC), Space Security and Defense Program (SSDP), US Space Command, US Strategic Command, Air Force Studies and Analysis, and the Air Force Research Laboratory. Current lines of effort include development and integration of models for all classes of threats to space systems, development of innovative approaches to joint mission thread and kill chain analyses, and exploration of concepts for mixed-resolution, multi-domain campaign analysis.
The Engineer will adopt Model Based Systems Engineering principles and practices to develop robust modeling architectures to drive force design and CONOPS development for the US Space Force. A firm foundation in systems engineering, operations research, and object-oriented software coding (e.g. Python, C++, MATLAB) is essential for exceling in this position. The Engineer will develop Python-based algorithms for representing kill chain performance, based on available subject matter expertise and existing/developing mission thread descriptions. Applying a general understanding of military operations, the Engineer will build upon current work that applies Bayesian Networks, Markov Chains, and other stochastic techniques to estimate mission performance. The Engineer will integrate development in modeling and simulation tools such as Cameo Systems Modeler and AFSIM.
The Engineer will assist the Portfolio Lead with preparing technical products, integrating efforts across mission partners, and interacting with Government customers. Strong communication skills are required to present novel technical concepts to a wide variety of audiences.
Government customers are primarily located in Colorado Springs, Omaha, Albuquerque, Dayton, and the National Capital Region. While this position does not have a specified location, the Engineer must be willing to travel regularly to Government sites with Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Create, refine, and present data products with compelling narratives that provide analytically rigorous conclusions to both senior leaders and non-technical audiences.
- Work efficiently with the Government, in cross-contractor teams, and individually, to identify and isolate analytic, logical, and syntax anomalies in data, algorithms, models, and simulations.
- Conduct analysis and create custom metrics within a discrete event simulator framework like AFSIM, and perform analysis with post-processing software like Python, R, Excel, etc.
- Provide quantitative answers to challenging, space systems-focused questions.
- Support subject matter experts who advise senior leaders on methodological, analytical, and domain-specific issues.
- Analyze the accuracy of algorithms within modeling frameworks and collaborate to discover improvements.
- Assist the Portfolio Lead with the development of technical communication products.
- Must be SCI eligible (background investigation within last 5 years or in continuous monitoring) and able to work regularly in Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities.
- Must be willing to travel CONUS approximately 10% of the time.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical or Systems Engineering or Operations Research/Mathematics (or related).
- 9 years relevant experience with Bachelor's Degree, 7 years relevant experience with Master's Degree. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience.
- Object-oriented software coding experience (e.g. Python, C++, MATLAB).
- Familiarity with Model Based Systems Engineering, SysML, and modeling tools such as Cameo Systems Modeler.
Preferred Requirements
- Master’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical or Systems Engineering or Operations Research/Mathematics (or related).
- Experience in modeling, simulating, and analyzing DoD systems at various levels of granularity (e.g. engagement, mission, campaign).
- Strong skills in critical thinking and problem solving
