About the Job
Who We Are:
The Materials Science and Failure Analysis Section develops solutions for complex materials problems using experimental and analytical methods. We serve government and commercial sponsors across a variety of technical sectors.
Objectives of this Role:
- Perform hands-on experimental and analytical projects in metallurgy/materials science involving failure analysis, applied materials characterization, and materials development/optimization.
- Use a variety of metallurgical laboratory instruments and techniques for the preparation, characterization and evaluation of different materials.
- Work as part of a team and independently to develop solutions to address material analysis-related needs of clients.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
- In collaboration with senior staff, perform analytical and experimental work in metallurgical and materials science laboratory spaces.
- Routinely perform characterizations and analyses using instruments and techniques including scanning electron and light microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction.
- Prepare metallographic specimens for analysis using standard laboratory techniques including grinding and polishing, preparation and application of chemical etchants, and microscopic imaging.
- As necessary, perform troubleshooting on experimental methods and data acquisition instruments.
- Interface with project team members and clients to develop task scopes and schedules for technical performance of work.
- Provide regular updates to clients in writing and in person.
