POSITION SUMMARY
Facilitates gastrointestinal diagnostic procedures by preparing and providing the required supplies and equipment. Assists physicians and Registered Nurses during the endoscopy procedures.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Education: High school diploma. 1–2 years’ experience as a nursing assistant or medical assistant and/or LPN. Endoscopy experience preferred.
License/Certificates
American Heart Association BLS certification within 30 days of hire.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists in gastrointestinal procedures under the direction of a physician, assists in sterile processing and supply duties under the supervision of the registered nurse in the area. Functions well with other team members and shows initiative and judgment in anticipating the needs of the team. In downtime, assists department in picking cases, room turnover and supporting sterile processing. Other duties may be assigned.
Function independently as an endoscopy technician during gastrointestinal procedures by:
- assembling supplies and equipment required for the procedure;
- preparing and organizing supplies and equipment for the procedure;
- providing instruments and supplies to the surgical team during the procedure;
- maintaining an organized working area
- proficient in the operation of the medivators and processing of endoscopes;
- cleans and maintains scope inventory;
- maintains appropriate documentation for endoscopes and other equipment;
- checks instruments for cleanliness and proper function. Sends instruments out for repair as needed.
- assists in organization and receipt of supplies and maintenance of inventory
- carries out duties safely and use safety devices provided to protect self and others
- reports safety hazards as appropriate
Demonstrates basic knowledge of the following:
- Principles and practice of aseptic technique
- Invasive procedures performed at Riverwood Healthcare
- Equipment, instruments, and supplies used in the procedure room
- Infection prevention methods appropriate to surgical service
- Sterile processing, documentation required along with monitoring and tracking
Required to:
- Work collaboratively in departmental quality improvement activities and assist in data gathering
- Serve as a technical subject matter expert
- Assist in the orientation of new staff members
- Educate one on new technical procedures and infection control methods
- Assist with ordering supplies and putting them away. Anticipate supply needs with regard to the endoscopy schedule
- Promote service excellence by demonstrating polite, cooperative and respectful behavior to both internal and external customers
- Assume responsibility for completing mandatory educational requirements and staying up to date on changes in recommended practices and standards of care
- Safeguard security and confidentiality of data/information according to HIPAA guidelines.
Other Expectations:
- This position may include irregular working hours based on the surgical schedule.
