Columbus House opened its doors in 1982 to provide services for men and women at least 18 years of age. Our goals quickly broadened from the mere provision of food and shelter and simple survival, to understanding and working toward overcoming the problems which cause people to become homeless.

Purpose
Under the direction of the Employment and Benefits Manager, the Employment Specialist helps clients to obtain employment and further their career. The Employment Specialist will seek to engage potential employers to assist individuals to obtain and retain employment. The Employment Specialist works directly with the client, his or her support team, the American Job Centers, and local businesses in the greater New Haven, Hartford, and Middlesex areas. The Employment Specialist works to empower consumers to reach financial independence by imparting relevant skills as necessary.

Salary Range: $25.50 to $27.50 per hour plus excellent benefits
Schedule: Tuesday- Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
- Associate’s degree and 2-3 years’ experience in job development.
- Responsible and reliable, able to conduct oneself professionally while maintaining client confidentiality and respecting proper relationship boundaries
- Demonstrated history of cultural sensitivity and knowledge of and respect for persons suffering from mental health and substance use disorders.
- Knowledge of community support systems and resources. Knowledge of potential employers in the Greater Hartford, and Middlesex areas.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with a deadline-oriented mindset.
- Strong written and oral communication skills employing the English language. Proficient in Microsoft Office and other common desktop applications.
- Able to work with diverse populations.
- Sound judgment and decision-making ability.
- Crisis intervention skills, boundaries, confidentiality, universal precautions, harm reduction, strong empathetic skills.
- Possessed of a strong desire to promote equal access and opportunity for homeless persons and those with disabilities.
- Familiar with mental health, substance abuse and dual diagnosis issues and dynamics.
- Ability to collaborate successfully with others. Able to meet all documentation requirements. Must be able to multitask.
- Valid drivers’ license with a good driving history.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist clients with securing employment opportunities
- Aggressively and innovatively pursue the development of additional employment solutions
- Coordinate the use of employment assistance programs. Coordinate with area employers conducting job development and placement opportunities for homeless individuals/ we also serve individuals who are housed (PSH), or formerly homeless
- Provide outreach, assessment, intakes and follow up services to enhance employment and retention for three months
- Educate clients on how to use community supports for future employment needs
- Managing a caseload of 40 unduplicated clients per annum, with 15 job placements.
- Attend regularly scheduled supervision, team or staff meetings as requested
- Monitor all cases assigned and complete all documentation/charting required
- Assist with the delivery of the Employment Enrichment Center Groups as assigned
- Maintain strict confidentiality concerning both program applicants and accepted clients while carrying out all duties.
- Other related duties as assigned
