Fairview is looking for an Emergency Room Technician (ERT) to join our team at the University of MN Medical Center West Bank Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.
Job Summary:
The Emergency Department Technician (EDT) is responsible for assisting the professional nurse in the delivery of patient care, transporting patient and/or equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms, and re-ordering and stocking supplies. The EDT may or may not be given a patient care assignment based on unit needs and the discretion of the professional nurse
Schedule:
+ FTE: 0.75 (60 hours per pay period)
+ Shift: night shift
+ Weekends: every other weekend

The emergency department at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center – West Bank is part of our flagship medical center campus along the Mississippi River. Located in Minneapolis, we serve many adults and children in the city and nearby communities who need care for an immediate or critical health concern. Responsibilities Job Description
Job Expectations:
Patient Care Support:
+ Vital Signs Monitoring: Assist in monitoring patient vital signs (e.g., heart rate, blood pressure, temperature) in the emergency room, providing critical data to healthcare providers.
+ Assisting RN in Procedures: Help the registered nurse (RN) with various patient care activities, such as point of care testing, IV-line setup and discontinuation, enema administration, suture removal, catheterization, 12-lead EKG, and restraint application.
+ Patient Transport: Assist with transporting patients by wheelchair or cart to various areas within the facility.
+ Support with Mobility Aids: Help fit and assist patients with the use of casts, crutches, immobilizers, and splints; assist with ambulation and patient positioning.
+ Sample Transportation: Transport medical samples (e.g., blood, urine) from patients as directed by the RN.
+ Assist in Medical Procedures: Support doctors and nurses during medical procedures, including specimen collection (e.g., eye lavage, ear irrigation, dressing changes), ensuring proper technique.
+ Patient and Family Communication: Report patient observations and concerns to the RN and respond promptly to patient call lights and requests.
+ Patient Dignity and Privacy: Maintain patient dignity, privacy, and confidentiality in all aspects of care, and adapt care to the patient's age and developmental needs.
+ Emergency Response: Assist in resuscitation efforts, providing CPR and using a bag/valve mask as necessary.
+ Documentation: Accurately document patient care activities and procedures in nursing records, ensuring clarity, conciseness, and timeliness.
Room and Unit Maintenance:
+ Restocking Supplies: Replenish room supplies, carts, and oxygen tanks, ensuring equipment is available for patient care.
+ Room Cleanup: Assist with cleaning patient rooms between patients to maintain a hygienic environment.
+ Room and Cart Checklist: Ensure rooms and carts are equipped and organized, following designated checklists for safety and readiness.
Equipment Quality Control:
+ Quality Control Checks: Perform regular quality control checks on designated medical equipment and ensure all equipment is functioning properly.
+ Reporting Issues: Report any discrepancies or malfunctions in equipment to the RN.
+ Medication Transport: Transport medications from the delivery area to the Emergency Room or Medication Room as requested by a Registered Nurse.
+ Maintain Nursing Station Cleanliness: Ensure cleanliness and organization in the nursing station office areas to facilitate an efficient work environment.
By fulfilling these duties, you will contribute to the smooth operation of the emergency department and ensure that patients receive high-quality, timely care. Your role will be integral to providing support to the medical team and enhancing the overall patient experience.
Qualifications
Required:
License/Certification/Registration:
+ Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers) certification required upon hire and must be maintained throughout employment. Ontrack participants must be able to obtain Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification upon completion of the OnTrack program.
+ One or more of the following:
+ Current EMT or ERT certification upon hire (does not need to be maintained throughout employment).
+ Current Paramedic Certification (does not need to be maintained throughout employment).
+ Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry upon hire (certification does not need to be maintained throughout employment). Note: Individuals completing a Nursing Assistant program and scheduled to take the NA Registry exam have 90 days post-hire to become active on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry.
+ Current enrollment in an LPN, RN, or Nurse Practitioner program, with completion of at least one semester of clinical rotation within the program.
+ Six months of recent direct patient care experience in an acute care, long-term care, or home care setting (appropriate roles may include Nursing Assistant, PCA, or Resident Assistant).
+ Successful completion of Fairview’s OnTrack Nursing Assistant training program.
+ LPN licensure upon hire (does not need to be maintained throughout employment).
Preferred:
Experience:
+ Previous Emergency Room experience of 1 year or more as an Emergency Room Scribe, paramedic, ERT, EMT, EDT, or ED EMS.
+ Current CNA or NST experience of 1 year or more.
License/Certification/Registration:
+ Paramedic, EMT, ERT, LPN, CNA, PCA.
