Purpose:The ELT Instructor provides short-term English Language Training (ELT) that provides a bridge from client’s first language to essential English for use in navigating environments and systems within the United States. Lessons are designed to simulate daily English usage in different real-life situations, such as shopping, all types of physical care, housing acquisition and upkeep. Curriculum supports clients in all language modes – reading, writing, speaking and listening. Further, English is developed from pre-literacy to a level of fluency that targets immediate employability in such a manner as to promote physical security and economic self-sufficiency. This position is funded through December 2024.
Responsibilities:- Teach simple English grammar, writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills.
- Tailor lesson plans to meet specific student needs (focusing on the alphabet and numerals for pre-literacy level students).
- Act as a resource for students, giving information to help them survive and thrive in their new communities.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records and personal information at all times.
- Document all contacts and services in client case files and maintain case note logs.
- Prepare funder-required reports.
- Maintain cooperative relationships and open communication with all staff and students.
- Perform all duties in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner.
- Assist in enforcing classroom rules and administrative regulations.
- Collaborate with Community Engagement Associate in CWS volunteer orientations to train new ELT volunteers and plan outreach activities to recruit new volunteers.
- Must have valid driver’s license and suitable vehicle for transporting clients.
- Work varied hours, including some night and weekend work.
- Undertake other duties as assigned.
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
Experience:
Two years of experience in teaching adults. Fluency in English. Superior written and oral communication skills are a must. The successful applicant must have experience working in a multi-cultural environment and must be sensitive to the cultural and linguistic needs of clients. The applicant must demonstrate creativity and initiative and a high level of organization. Previous work experience and interest in refugee resettlement is desired.
Other Skills:
The successful candidate must be computer literate, with proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, and Access) and internet applications. This position is a combination of virtual and in-person instruction at the CWS Charlotte Office. Willingness to work on a per diem basis on site at our local office.
