The Electrical Hardware Engineer is responsible for creating, analyzing, designing, developing, testing, and modifying complex computer systems, including hardware design, architecture, network design, and prototypes, and consulting with clients on system design and functional specifications. The Hardware Engineer conducts system analysis employing techniques and procedures to determine hardware and system functional specifications. This self-driven individual must be able to operate efficiently and cohesively within a multi-person team of engineers, providing technical expertise and guidance to fellow team members and requiring minimal technical oversight.

The Electrical Hardware Engineer is responsible for creating, analyzing, designing, developing, testing, and modifying complex computer systems, including hardware design, architecture, network design, and prototypes, and consulting with clients on system design and functional specifications. The Hardware Engineer conducts system analysis employing techniques and procedures to determine hardware and system functional specifications. This self-driven individual must be able to operate efficiently and cohesively within a multi-person team of engineers, providing technical expertise and guidance to fellow team members and requiring minimal technical oversight.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, test, document, create, or modify electrical hardware systems and/or programs for use in medical devices, based on system design specifications from clients.
- Perform selection and sourcing of hardware components including processors, peripherals and discrete components.
- Promote the use of industry best-practices regarding emerging technologies, risk mitigations, and general hardware development standards amongst fellow team members.
- Understanding technical requirements and stakeholder feedback and translate those inputs into effective architectural designs and hardware solutions.
- Participate with the risk management team in the development of risk documentation.
- Solve complex system challenges involving multiple software and/or hardware subsystems.
- Use sound hardware engineering principles to ensure that developed hardware is of high quality, maintainable, efficient, reliable, understandable, and fault tolerant.
- Work with test engineers and other developers to resolve hardware problem reports.
- Work with team members to understand, profile, estimate complexity for project work items, and lead design reviews of team members’ work.
- Estimate effort and resources required for development (hardware) tasks and actively work towards improving accuracy of personal estimates in comparison to actual work effort performed.
- Develop schematics – digital, analog and mixed signal designs.
- Manage schematic entry, board and component layout, creating and maintaining parts libraries.
- Develop test plans and board bring up (hands on) for initial prototypes.
- Analog signal manipulation (scaling, filtering, amplifying, converting).
- Work with printed circuit board manufacturers and assembly houses to create PCBs.
- Evaluate customer provided prototype, benchmarking performance, and manufacturing viability.
- Bachelor’s degree, Master’s Degree preferred, in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of experience in direct design contributor’s role.
- 3-5 years technical writing experience for system requirements, design documents, and test reports.
- Experience with identifying and addressing EMC & Safety regulatory issues.
- Experience in generating electrical design documentation and technical reports.
- Strong knowledge of analog/digital circuitry and printed circuit board assembly process.
- Exceptional ability to use hardware schematic/PCB capture software (Altium preferred).
- Exceptional ability to use testing tools such as oscilloscopes, programmable power supply, digital multimeter, and waveform generator to test hardware functionality.
- Strong ability to thrive in an environment with multiple simultaneous design projects which requires adjustment in setting priorities and meeting deadlines.
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal) and organizational skills.
- Good interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with customers and multi-cultural teams.
- Knowledge of ISO 13485/14971, 93/42/EEC, 90/385/EEC, EN45502, EN60601-1, EN61000, CISPR 11 is a plus!
- Knowledge of tolerance, worst case analysis, reliability and FMEA methodologies is also a plus!
