Job Definition and Purpose:
- Makes calculations for recommending sizes and specifications of electrical power and control systems; prepares preliminary drawings of plant systems and specifies necessary equipment.
- The Electrical Engineer works under the direction of the Department Manager of the Electrical Engineering Department.
- The Engineer must be very knowledgeable regarding company drawing and design standards and must be capable of using and understanding standards and codes used by Engineers in their work. The Electrical Engineer will generally function as the lead Electrical Engineer on the project team.
- The Electrical Engineer will interface with the client and visit job sites to investigate existing power and control systems. Field inspections require the capability of climbing ladders and stairs, walking on uneven terrain, kneeling, bending and stooping to examine progress and status of the work at the project.
- The position requires proficient keyboard skills, and requires extended periods of six to eight hours, sitting and making calculations and/or entering data into a computer with intense attention to the computer screen. Lifting on the job is generally limited to moving manuals and files whose length and size cause them to be clumsy to move around, and whose weight is usually under 30 lbs.
- Good analytical skills with strong attention to detail, and commitment to accuracy are required in this position.
- Good coordination and communication skills to gain cooperation between departments are essential to ensure efficient and accurate preparation of drawings according to the project specifications.
- Calculates the size and specifications for electrical service and control systems which meet project requirements and obtain the results needed to meet client objectives and specifications; equipment includes transformers, switchgear, motor, motor starters, drive systems and other control equipment required.
- Participates in the preparation of capital cost estimates: calculates electrical load, power distribution and control system requirements.
- Develops designs and makes calculations to verify workability of power and control systems; uses AutoCAD to produce accurate, professional drawings.
- Contributes and participates as a team member on the project(s) as necessary.
- May assist in fieldwork inspections as assigned; performs other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
- Uses reference materials as necessary when useful in completing engineering tasks; constantly updates knowledge of technology and advancement in the field to keep abreast of new developments, methods and procedures.
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering; registered Professional Engineer; and familiar with AutoCAD.
- 15 years of industrial design experience; or combination of minimum 10 years experience and Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Knowledge and experience using computers and appropriate software and other tools as required to produce drawings and documentation.
- Knowledge and ability to perform calculations quickly and accurately.
- Familiarity with reference materials and where/how to find information needed in professional work.
- Excellent communication skills with ability to coordinate work with other staff members.
- Strong organization skills to effectively manage time and resources in the most efficient manner.
