About the Job
The Tsui Group is seeking a candidate who is qualified and experienced in educational facility construction projects to serve as a Electrical Engineer - Services Design for a large educational client in the Pasadena area. This position’s primary responsibility is to coordinate campus-wide electrical system distribution testing, and maintenance and operations, support services and projects, a variety of small and large renovation projects, as well as new construction projects with the following duties:
Job Duties:
- Make recommendations for and oversees the testing and maintenance of electrical power equipment by campus personnel and contracted service providers
- Manage electrical maintenance and corrective projects with crews but can work independently.
- Coordinate investigations, tests, and evaluations, and prepares written reports
- Review new construction and renovation projects for proper installation of electrical equipment for Planning, Design & Construction
- Insure installations and designs are compliant to electrical code, OSHA regulations and Caltech Design Guidelines for all maintenance repairs, renovation and new construction projects
- Work with a qualified electrical engineering firm to perform shock and arc flash risk assessments and short circuity fault/device coordination studies are performed, along with coordinating the installation and maintaining the accuracy of the arc flash hazard warning labels
- Evaluate faulty equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test equipment or software
- Coordinate testing required to identify, locate, and correct electrical circuit abnormalities
- Identify the types, classification, and application of transformers and electrical circuits used as temporary or emergency power sources
- Understand the differences between dry-type, cast-coil, and liquid-filled transformers
- Understand the application of power substation, distribution, instrument, and control transformers
- Reviews tests and inspects insulation on electrical equipment
- Coordinates work by others doing insulation testing, on conductors, oil filled transformers, and other electrical devices
- Monitor in the installation, maintenance and renewal of cable, bus bar, overhead conductors, riser, jumpers, insulators, supports and bushings
- Develop an Electrical Safety Program and coordinate field audit of this program
- Provide electrical design services to the Design & Construction Team as needed per California Electrical Code
- Design electrical schematics, interconnection diagrams, power distribution, control panels and other electrical drawings
- Generate detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and complete system-level electrical Bill of Materials, as required
- Conduct building system assessments and inspections to evaluate conditions, operations, and maintenance requirements of building electrical systems
- Provide technical assistance and guidance to operations and maintenance personnel for issues on electrical systems
- Support faculty, consultants and field electricians
- Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements
Required Degree/License:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Additional qualifying experience in excess to the minimum stated above may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.
- Electrical Professional Engineer license from the State of California
Minimum Required Experience:
- 10+ years of full time experience with electrical component maintenance and testing, design of lighting, power, data and communication systems in research and academic laboratory facilities or hospital facilities
- Knowledge of short-circuit voltage drop calculations; electrical and control components, instruments, sensors, switches and equipment selection; electro-mechanical controls and interlocks
- Thorough understanding of local, state and federal codes
- Advanced skills in AutoCAD
- Building Information Modeling experience including specific experience participating in whole building clash detection processes
- Ability to multi-task and make appropriate decisions about prioritizing assignment
- Ability to specify and select test equipment such as insulation resistance and power-factor measuring equipment, Digital Low Resistance Ohmmeters (DLRO), circuit breaker test equipment, transformer turns ratio and winding resistance test equipment, high potential test equipment, grounding systems test equipment, infrared (IR) survey instruments, metering and relaying test equipment, for example.
- Experienced in defining the approach boundaries, arc-flash boundaries, establish and enforce lock-out/tag-out policies confined space work practices, and safe handling of materials utilized in the trade, in accordance to the California Electrical Code, Cal-Osha, NFPA and all other applicable codes
- Knowledge of electro-mechanical (i.e., motors, generators, etc.) equipment technology and applications, 120V single phase and 480V 3-phase circuits, programmable logic control equipment, operations and programming, electrical protective devices, low, medium and high voltage switchgear equipment, technology, maintenance and servicing, motor control centers and 4160 equipment
- Manage, interpret, and evaluate standard insulation power-factor/dissipation-factor tests on electrical power equipment, including transformers, breakers, cables, bushings, rotating equipment, and insulating liquids
Additional Preferred Experience:
- 30 hours documented safety training/certification through one or multiple OSHA approved trainers
- Experience in the installation, maintenance, servicing and troubleshooting of industrial electrical power distribution and control systems
- Computerized Maintenance Management Systems experience

- Salary Range: $100,000-$172,000
