What you will be doing:
Our client is a trailer OEM developing a software-based vehicle in a market segment historically not employing this level of technology. The Electrical Product Engineer-III is responsible for and provides technical support specifically on Trailer vehicle electrical systems including FMVSS 108 and 121 components and all other smart iOT components and ECU's that interact with vehicle telematics. This position requires in depth knowledge and experience working with 12/24V DC batteries, High voltage to low voltage conversion, total vehicle power system consumption and distribution management, CAN databus and automotive ethernet communication interaction between ECU's specifically SAE J1939 standards for vehicle communications and understands vehicle technology will become zero emission powered exclusively via electrification in the very near term. The individual is seasoned with hands-on experience and knowledge of wired and wireless sensors and components and has used different communication protocols either in the automotive, agricultural, or medium/heavy duty commercial vehicle industries.
- Develops, grows, and maintains relationships with system suppliers, support organizations and partners.
- For the vehicle system continually identifies the best and most cost-effective new technologies to advance the Smart trailer, integrating with emerging Electrification market demands.
- Evaluates, proposes, and implements innovations and technological advances to improve quality, system efficiency, performance, and vehicle operational safety.
- Develops and recommends testing protocols and designs associated test benches to simulate real world conditions in the lab.
- Has the highest respect for safety and designs vehicle electrical systems per all appropriate and required recommendations, standards, and regulations.
- Interacts with supplier counterparts to resolve moderate to complex development, production, and acceptance issues.
- Use diagnostic tools to collect data from the vehicle systems to test, confirm and approve system design compliance.
- Work directly with other Engineers and Technicians in a Lab setting or on the road with large vehicles.
- Work directly with fellow employee CDL test drivers to collect actual road data when developing and evaluating new systems.
- Travel to manufacturing plants to provide engineering support for the installation of items.
- Work with vendors and component suppliers to obtain required materials and technical information.
- Assists in the preparation of product/project definitions, manufacturing drawings, specifications, and test equipment designs.
- Writes technical reports on results and conclusions drawn from experiments conducted and incorporates findings in formal specifications.
- Maintain technical competency.
- Work with small cross functional Innovation teams on new ideation projects.
- Work with Production Engineering to coordinate use of new designs.
- Work with Manufacturing Engineering to determine feasibility/tooling requirements for new designs.
- Work with Material vendors to provide technical information needed to produce new designs.
- Other activities as appropriate.
What you'll need to be successful:
Essential:
- Education: Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 10 years of experience working with vehicle electrical control systems.
- Telemetry product experience and expertise
- Direct experience with a variety of electrical test equipment including on-board vehicle data loggers
- Working experience with CAN hardware i.e., Kvaser, Vector and knowledge of ISO 14229 ยท Knowledge of SAE, ISO and IEEE standards pertaining to the components, products and systems deployed on the vehicle.
- Self-motivated with excellent verbal, written and presentation communication skills.
- Ability to interact with representatives of other departments and companies and use product knowledge to provide accurate input.
- Proficient with Electrical design CAD systems and Electrical Design software.
- Familiarity with project management and tools in a formal Product Design Process working environment.
- Willingness to travel as required up to 10% of time.
