Job Overview:
The Electrical Controls Engineer is responsible for leading a team in programming, troubleshooting, and maintaining electrical control systems within an industrial/manufacturing environment. This role requires hands-on expertise in controls design, automation, material handling, and data collection. The supervisor will ensure compliance with electrical codes and standards, oversee the safety and performance of their team, and work with various electrical systems, including low-voltage distribution, PLCs, VFDs, and HMIs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise and manage a team responsible for electrical control systems in manufacturing equipment.
- Ensure compliance with NEC, UL508, and NFPA 79 codes for industrial manufacturing equipment.
- Troubleshoot and maintain electrical control systems, including PLCs, VFDs, HMIs, and Servo systems.
- Work with electrical systems ranging from 0-600 VAC and 0-1000 VDC, both single and three-phase.
- Build, wire, and configure electrical panels and control systems as needed.
- Program PLCs with a focus on ladder logic using Idec, Allen Bradley, Omron, Siemens.
- Configure automation equipment and ensure effective serial communication using RS232 and RS485.
- Utilize SCADA software, particularly Inductive Automation Ignition, for data collection and system monitoring.
- Research and specify components for electrical systems and equipment.
- Conduct performance evaluations, coaching, and disciplinary actions in coordination with HR.
- Ensure the safety of employees and maintain housekeeping standards within the area.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience (10 years).
- In-depth knowledge of electrical controls, automation, and material handling systems.
- Proficiency in programming PLCs (e.g., Idec, Allen Bradley, Omron, Siemens).
- Experience with SCADA systems, especially Inductive Automation Ignition.
- Familiarity with electrical distribution systems below 600V and relevant codes (NEC, UL508, NFPA 79).
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical for drafting and designing electrical systems.
- Strong supervisory skills, including team management, performance evaluation, and compliance with organizational policies.
Skills:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities for troubleshooting electrical systems.
- Excellent communication skills for writing reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, drafting software (AutoCAD), and electrical component programming software.
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
- Exposure to high, precarious places and loud noise environments.
- Regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to handle or feel objects.
