Gordon Chair for Policy Research and Evaluation with the goal of advancing quality and equity in education and demonstrating ETS's longstanding commitment to the values of equity and social justice in education that Dr. Gordon has long championed.

Background on Dr. Gordon

Edmund Gordon is the John M. Musser Professor of Psychology Emeritus at Yale University, Richard March Hoe Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Education and Founding Director Emeritus of the Institute of Urban and Minority Education (IUME) at Teachers College, Columbia University. From July 2000 until August 2001 Gordon was Vice President of Academic Affairs and Interim Dean at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Professor Gordons distinguished career spans professional practice, scholarly life as a minister, clinical and counseling psychologist, research scientist, author, editor, and professor. He held appointments at several of the nations leading universities including Howard, Yeshiva, Columbia, City University of New York, Yale, and the Educational Testing Service. He has served as visiting professor at City College of New York and Harvard. Professor Gordon was a Senior Scholar and Advisor to the President of the College Board where he developed and co-chaired the Taskforce on Minority High Achievement.

Author and/or editor of over 15 books and over 175 articles Gordon is a psychologist and expert in child development who has worked throughout his career on the issues and challenges of underprivileged and minority students in American education. As a clinician and researcher, he explored divergent learning styles and advocated for supplemental education long before most scholars had recognized the existence and importance of those ideas.

He was Chief of the Head Start Research Office under President Lyndon Johnson and from 2011 to 2013 he organized and mentored the (ETS) Gordon Commission, bringing together scholars to research and report on the Future of Assessment for Education. His most recent publication, Human Variance and Assessment for Learning, co-edited with Eleanor Armour-Thomas, Cynthia McCallister, and A. Wade Boykin (October 2019, Third World Press), is a further development of ideas generated from the Gordon Commission.

ETS Research Division is searching for a scholar of international reputation who has made outstanding contributions to advance equity, social justice, fairness, and quality in education and assessment, for the Edmund W. Gordon Chair appointment. The successful individual must have a distinguished record of advocacy, research scholarship, and impact on educational equity, asset-based student development, and minoritized student achievement.

The Edmund W. Gordon Chair is expected to contribute to and advance education policy research. The Gordon Chair will achieve that goal by conducting and disseminating research focused on equity in education and/or assessment, providing consultation to ETS staff and clients, representing ETS and ETS Research at conferences, engaging in professional activities that provide a service to the field of education policy, and contributing to the ongoing improvement of ETS products, services, and impactful research primarily focused on traditionally underrepresented populations. The Gordon Chair is expected to develop approaches and conduct policy studies that advance equal, equitable, and fair access to and outcomes in education and assessment and identify new or emerging directions for such work.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Advising on the direction for advancing equity considerations in educational research, policy, and assessment practice at ETS.
• Providing technical leadership in the design and implementation of complex research projects, especially ones related to educational access, equity, and educational advancement of traditionally underrepresented populations.
• Generating and/or contributing to new or modified theories and practices in the field of educational assessment, access, and the development of asset-based models and frameworks.
• Acting as a mentor to more junior-to-mid level research staff, and postdoctoral interns.
• Assisting in the recruitment of the next generation of scientists and researchers who are focused on advancing equity and access in education and in assessment.
• Leading external partnerships and collaborations with educational institutions to strengthen pipelines and pathways for students from underrepresented groups.
• Conducting ETS seminars and/or courses that contribute to the ongoing professional development of ETS and Research staff members.
• Serving as a consultant to Research staff and senior ETS leadership.
• Contributing to the development and implementation of assessment policies and priorities that have broad organizational implications for equity and fairness.
• Disseminating research findings through publications of books, chapters, articles, and research reports.
• Representing ETS through participation in seminars, symposia, professional organizations, and scientific and policy panels.
• Providing professional leadership in and fostering collaboration with the education, educational policy, assessment, and measurement research communities at large.

Education
A doctorate in education policy, educational measurement, educational psychology, education, sociology, or a related field is required.

Experience
Qualifications of the successful candidate include distinguished scholarship and evidence of outstanding research and policy leadership, with 10 years or more thought leadershipin educational systems and applied practices centering on equity. The candidate must have broad political and technical understanding of current education, educational policy, assessment, and measurement trends and proven ability to successfully interact with colleagues in the field on substantive issues.
